Sterling is a second striker-esque type of player who plays from the winger strata, much like Son this season, and to some extent Thomas Muller. A player like Raheem has always been pivotal to Pep's setup (Muller, Villa), thus making him seemingly undroppable.
Sterling's technique has never been world-class, not even when he's banging goals left & right when we won the titles, but with the goals he scored, it was easy to neglect that. Sterling's qualities has always been in off-the-ball movement, pace and intelligence.
But without creators like Silva to play Sterling on, it's harder for Sterling to have a major impact. Sure there's Kev, but when Kev gets marked out, there's no one else to combine with Sterling.
I'd admit Sterling is frustrating at times to watch, even more-so this and last season. Moreover, with someone labelled by most as a 'world class winger' sometimes, you'd expect him to create for himself.
But personally, I think it's only fair to see Sterling for the kind of player is actually is, than expect him to be something he won't ever be, at least not under Pep. An oddball footballer for sure, think Thomas Muller without the height.
