He shouldn't be believing in his own ability, rather he should be believing in his ability to develop... Ans if he believes in the latter, the better option is to go somewhere else and dominate.

Had Reinjders started in City's academy he wouldn't have made it either. Yet after working and improving his quality at lesser clubs, now je is ready and big clubs will give him more leeway. Coz he is proven.

Young players coming from the clubs youth program are not proven. If you are not Lamine Yamal or Foden-like World Class potential, you are better off leaving ur top club at the latest around 20 to give yourself a 3 year period to maximize development and have big teams calling your agent for a big move when you hit your peak around 24.

Sitting around in back up roles just isnt the best for young players.

He's unlikely to get regular football at City if we're loading up on new signings this summer. Who's going to move aside to accommodate him?

If he's happy with the bench, he'll orobably end up another McAtee. If he backs himself and makes a move, he'll at least get more chance to prove himself.

The biggest problem for many of our 'local lads' in the Academy is that they've been living in the City bubble for nearly all of their lives. Moving on to another club / area / country after so many years quickly becomes a question of their character.

I'd advise any youngster in the Academy to folllow the money. If they get a good offer from a PL club (like Cole Palmer), or top overseas club (like Jadon Sancho) they should take it.

Follow the money, take the risk, back your own talent.

You both make some good points, and it's certainly possible that my desire to see Academy lads make it with City is overriding the cold, hard logic that you're presenting. I do think that between well-chosen loans and grabbing your chance when it presents itself (as Rico and now Nico have both done), there is maybe more of a path for players to stay than the categorical advice to leave as soon as possible, but it's hard to argue that for the majority of players the best way to the top is to get real experience elsewhere first

True. There is a path to make the team. But i still believe to become more than a fringe member, the best path often is leaving. As a fan, i hate it. But as an adviser, its the advice id give young players every time.

Also, if i had kids in thee academy, I'd advise against loans too. Sign a 4 year contract at 17 and if you are not integral by 20, don't sign a new Contract.

City can feel free to insert a buy back option clause when selling. But you don't want a career full of loans and coming back wondering where you'd be the following year.

I think there is plenty of game time this season for him, so gonna disagree with most on here thinking he has to leave.

Rayan Ait Nouri clearly signals we will play with an attacking LB, O Reilly will backup here perfectly as the next in line.

I also dont believe MGW is coming, with Cherki coming in a 4231 continues to be the perfect system for us.

The 2 CMs are mainly Rodri, Nico G and Reijnders, with Kova and O Reilly in the mix.

I also think O Reilly is a perfect Haaland backup, and can see him slotting there easily as a false 9 who is a crossing option.

That's a good shout. Id really like that.

I want him to stay obviously. But of o was hos advisor who was considering strictly his interest, od advise he goes to Germany and try tp start weekly and become dominant. The physical tools are there. But he needs significant game time against grown up to iterate into his best self.

But! I agree him as backup striker is a fantastic call.

I don't think he'll get much game time at CM order than 5 minute cameos absent major injuries. Rodri, Reinjders, Gonzalez, and Kova will suck up all those minutes. And thats without Bernie or Gundo staying and MGW coming ( which i doubt will happen now)

But he is the best Haaland backup. Hope Pep considers it. 15 games at LB and 6 cup starts at striker can easily be his baseline.

I jumped to the last page, so I haven't read any of the comments about people thinking he should, or want him to leave, but the fact that there are people who believe that, after such a great season, while playing in a completely new position to him, is so disappointing.

As we have no idea yet who will be leaving the club, it is impossible to say whether Nico will gain consistent game time.
When the dust settles, here is a player (IMO) who is able to pick up regular minutes in cup football, and increasing minutes from the bench in PL games. This should be the pathway for all academy graduates whom we believe have a long-term future in the first-team, just as it was for Phil. That we were 'forced' to play O'Reilly and he did well does not mean that he is part of our best eleven...yet. He may become it, sure.

O’Reilly got his opportunity last season because we were down to the bare bones and he grasped it. The question is whether Guardiola is going to show any flexibility and change how he rotates and uses substitutes. If he doesn’t and falls back to using a core of players, now that he has them back and fit, then O’Reilly should seek a loan elsewhere for his own development. Sitting on the bench and then hearing Guardiola admit in May 2026 that he should have used him more will be of little comfort.

would sell Rico rather than O Reilly personally. Nico is versatile, can be our cover at LB and midfield and has a goal in him. Squad player at man city is a great place to be in at 20 years old, and a lot of the elders will either be sold this year or their contracts run out in 2026.

Hope he backs himself.

Definitely one to keep, if we don’t screw up like we did last November we will have lots of games next season to develop young talent, better to let some of the old soldiers go whilst we can still get money for them.

Another reason why we need to move on 2/3 of Bernardo, Gundogan and Kovacic. The last 2 played well last season especially in the last games but at least 2 of them have to go.
O’Reilly is a big talent and will get his minutes on LB and CM if we somehow can thin the midfield. Sadly he might have to wait another year to get much more minutes and even then MGW and or Wharton might still be on the list.
I‘d rather loan him to Lyon for a year instead of getting low minutes.
