He shouldn't be believing in his own ability, rather he should be believing in his ability to develop... Ans if he believes in the latter, the better option is to go somewhere else and dominate.
Had Reinjders started in City's academy he wouldn't have made it either. Yet after working and improving his quality at lesser clubs, now je is ready and big clubs will give him more leeway. Coz he is proven.
Young players coming from the clubs youth program are not proven. If you are not Lamine Yamal or Foden-like World Class potential, you are better off leaving ur top club at the latest around 20 to give yourself a 3 year period to maximize development and have big teams calling your agent for a big move when you hit your peak around 24.
Sitting around in back up roles just isnt the best for young players.
He's unlikely to get regular football at City if we're loading up on new signings this summer. Who's going to move aside to accommodate him?
If he's happy with the bench, he'll orobably end up another McAtee. If he backs himself and makes a move, he'll at least get more chance to prove himself.
The biggest problem for many of our 'local lads' in the Academy is that they've been living in the City bubble for nearly all of their lives. Moving on to another club / area / country after so many years quickly becomes a question of their character.
I'd advise any youngster in the Academy to folllow the money. If they get a good offer from a PL club (like Cole Palmer), or top overseas club (like Jadon Sancho) they should take it.
Follow the money, take the risk, back your own talent.
You both make some good points, and it's certainly possible that my desire to see Academy lads make it with City is overriding the cold, hard logic that you're presenting. I do think that between well-chosen loans and grabbing your chance when it presents itself (as Rico and now Nico have both done), there is maybe more of a path for players to stay than the categorical advice to leave as soon as possible, but it's hard to argue that for the majority of players the best way to the top is to get real experience elsewhere first
