8 | Mary Fowler

I guess it works for Mary keeping her options open as her partner is the best RL in the world and there is no sign of him coming to the UK - and for the club too as they see how she recovers from the ACL injury - (Roord as example was not the same player). Given her ability I am hopeful that she returns as good as she was and we can look to extend in 27.

I did think she signed a 4 year deal in 2022 - until summer 2026 so in reality it's only a single year added although I may have that wrong.
Same thought occurred to me. Mary has youth on her side in that regard.

Absolutely fantastic news. Bit odd it’s only a two year deal but I thought the same when we re-signed Kerstin

I think the contracts are usually shorter in women's football because traditionally the wages are so much lower. And a lot of the transfers are free. A player isnt going to hitch themselves to a club for 4 or 5 years on a relatively lower wage. Have noticed 4 year contracts become a bit more common now but usually where a club has shelled out a lot for a player (e.g. Alyssa Thompson, Grace Clinton) so clubs understandably need to protect their asset.

Yeah, I’m well aware contracts in womens football are shorter.

I just find it odd that it’s essentially a one year extension. A two year extension would have felt a bit more appropriate but that’s just my two cents

I think in Roords case it had a little bit more to do with the fact she just didn’t want to be here anymore.

A 22 year old with the CFA at her disposal should have no problem coming back from an ACL injury. It’s not the career ender it once was.

I suppose it depends how much of a pay bump she also got

Yeah, that’s a good point.

You’d like to think with how well she developed last season we’d be giving her a big incentive to want to stick around. Didn’t the Australia manager say she’s due back in November?

Yeah defo. Roord seems to have moved around a lot in her career and she seemed pretty sincere in her leaving interviews that she just wanted to go home ultimately after so much time away. Plus there was the pull of her partner being over there too.

Update:

Jeglertz also provided an update on Mary Fowler’s rehabilitation process with the Australia international recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The injury has prevented the versatile forward from featuring since April and our head coach says she’s working tirelessly with Club medical staff to return to full fitness.

He added: “She’s working hard every day. She’s on her way and following the plan, but she has a long way to go after that big injury.

“There’s nothing that says anything has changed in it. She’s working hard every day and is on her way.”

As I suspected the talk of a November playing return (from the Aussie coach) was a bit optimistic. I think November is when she steps up training for a return to action some time early in the new year.

ACL's can be notoriously difficult to 100% overcome and different players recovery can be chalk and cheese. Roord was back playing after nine months, yet Sam Kerr has been out 20 months. Let Mary recover properly in her own body's time. No point trying to rush the process. Your bound to pick up little niggles too on your return, just like Rodri has done. Your whole body needs time to re-adjust to playing demands.

Let's hope it's sooner rather than later, she'll be a great addition back to the squad.
