82/83 Red GK Shirt

On Christmas day 1946 City beat Plymouth Argyle (wearing green) 4-3 at Maine Road.

Frank Swift wore a red Jersey.

How do I know?

I was there.

And the following day the 2 teams met again and it was a record crowd for Plymouth (there were actually more at Plymouth than at the Maine Road game). I have a photo of Swift in the second game (black & white of course!) but he does appear to be wearing a darker shirt than normal, so maybe he wore red for both games.

The reason for the comparatively low crowd at Maine Road was because of a pre-lunchtime kick-off so the two teams could catch the only train to Plymouth on Xmas day.

Only the Football League could balls -up fixtures so that teams nearly 300 miles apart played each other on successive days in mid winter.

The season before we played Newcastle home and away on those dates.
