82 | Rico Lewis - 2024/25

The idea of fullback moving into midfield just sucks.

Pep gave it up for half of a season and we won the Treble.

No team won a CL with a reverted fullback.

No team won a World cup or Euros with a reverted fullback.

Whenever Lewis or Cancelo play they just bring huge pressure to the other teammates. In the past with a fully fit squad they can barely handle it. Now they just cannot. The more Rico Lewis plays the more frequently the other defenders will get injured.
It can work and did work in the past. Teams are definitely more on to it now and maybe it gets exploited far easier than it once did as average teams in the league have improved, certainly on the counter. I wouldn’t be bothered if we moved away from it long term. However, for it to be worthwhile these days i think the player doing it needs to be extremely gifted for the trade off defensively. Yes i know Delph did it very well but it was new then and we had prime KDB and Silva. Cancelo at his best was worth it at times but i don’t see how Rico will ever offer enough there for us to leave his side completely exposed whenever we lose possession.

Inverted fullback isn't that bad if player does his chores well.
We have won PL with Delph and Zinchenko for many times.
Cancelo also, wasn't he something like that ?

But what Rico lacks is efficiency with the ball, there is no excuse in loosing ball as much as he did yesterday, cause if we aren't solid in our buildup and possession and loose the ball easily there, then our whole system cracks.

We have a luxury to loose balls in the final third, because that's where our defenders and midfielders are able to intercept it or take a foul if needed.

But when you loose it in our third or midfield third, then it's obvious that we are exposed and opponents can hurt us.

It's like.. if it wasn't John stones in treble season and we played Ruben in that role, most probably we would suffer a lot, but John was playing very efficiently and helping us, never hurting our possession and stably / efficiently delivering it to the teammates.

So it depends on the player.

Why would I want to bother ?

Your opinions are worthless imho.
You must really hate City since just about all of my opinions praise our players. If my opinions are worthless it means you are on the opposite spectrum = hating on most of our players. If that's "worthy" than I would rather have my worthless opinions. Why bother then, block button is your friend if they are worthless anyway. I am guessing you haven't done this because you are enjoying the personal attacks. I haven't engaged in it and will never participate in that behaviour. I wish you all the best.

Good goal but the kid cannot defend. Lightweight, regularly out of position, doesn't have enough pace to make up for it, and struggles tracking back. He can't be playing fullback for us when we're leaking like a sieve

He wouldn't be playing/or put in that position if Stones wasn't made of glass and Rodri was't injured.

Stones would be in midfield instead, or helping him out and of course along with Rodri.

As it is, he's badly exposed with them missing.

Those that have turned on him, and other players, because we've hit a bad patch are a disgrace.

Thought he played a lot better on Saturday than he has been.

He’d been playing a bit bloody boring of late. But he was much livlier and more positive on Saturday. He was looking for quick passes, making good forward passes, passing between the lines much more, playing at pace and I’d been disappointed with his finishing a few times this season (some easy chances where he wasn’t under much pressure at Bratislava and Liverpool where he should be slotting those home) but that finish on Saturday was a proper striker’s finish.

And he loved it. A bit of frustration with his celebration, grabbing the badge and kissing it as if to say ‘come on I love this club we can all do better’.

Still suspect defensively, but he has been since he’s been in the team even in games he’s played really well. Just something he’s going to have to keep working and improving on.

But much more positive with the ball.

I curse the day he entered football academy

Symbol of this season’s City team

But it’s not Rico’s fault
This stubborn manager of ours

Needs to be dropped...

Constantly out of position, getting ran past and people ran in behind him......cant defend a cross

Isnt good enough in midfield and isnt a good enough defender...therefore ain good enough for this team

I actually predicted the second goal in the pre match thread -
