82 | Rico Lewis - 2024/25

How is he a midfielder?

Traits of a midfielder are ball playing and being able to get around the pitch, or be able to control the midfield with passing ability

Then an ability to help defend and to score or create goals

Lewis does none of the above, and has been upgraded because he came through the academy

He's an absolutely average footballer who excels at nothing
I'd add that a midfielder needs to pitch in with a goal or 2 - Rico gets into so many great positions but his finishing has to be one of the worst in the club.

Good footballer but hasn't got a position.
Not quick enough to play full back and not good enough on the ball to play in midfield.
I agree with you. He is not good enough defensively and nothing special offensively.
If so.. how do you think he is a good footballer?

He is average on his best. Zinchenko/ delph kind of a player, not beyond that. We need players like that in the squad, nothing wrong with that. But it's time people stopped thinking he is Walker's heir. Walker at his peak is one of the best in history at his position. Rico won't get a tenth of that. He is not the solution

Get fucked you ****.
He’s right, and there’s no disgrace in that. Celverly played 13 seasons in the PL and eventually found his level at a few bottom half clubs (with a few years in the Championship).

Lewis is going to end up a decent low PL/top of the Championship level player like Nedum Onuoha or Stephen Ireland ended up and Tommy Doyle will end up being - like Tom Cleverly was - which is great and another notch in City’s Academy conveyer belt… but Lewis doesn’t look anything like a top of the PL player in the making.

He’s got into the England team purely based on playing for City, like Celverly did early in his career at United. So I can see why the lad said that in his post a a detrimental thing, but there’s no disgrace in having a career like Cleverly’s. If our Academy keeps developing players like that we’ll continue to coin it in from it.

Delph was a very good player at his peak particularly when he played in midfield

………… .
A more conventional fullback in JWE would be far better option right now even though he's nowhere near as good of a player as Lewis.
I do think Pep should have gone with a conventional back 4 because again we were left exposed. He should have tried JWE he would have helped us keep the shape.

Not sure what Pep is trying to prove by encouraging Rico to ramble up the pitch so high.

Right. I meant more about their versatility. Such players are very important. Can play right back, left back, midfielder when you need them. I don't blame him, not for the loss or anything. I just think we need to wake up and realize he's not an elite player as people think/ hope. He is certainly not a Foden if we are talking about quality level of homegrown players
