82 | Rico Lewis - 2024/25

Great 1st half.
I can't comment on those match threads, but I couldn't believe some of the comments I was reading. He was one of our three best players with Kovacic and Haaland.

The one ball that he put us in danger was a horrible pass blasted into him from Ederson, and he made a brilliant tactical foul, which people called DUMB! Baffling.

Guardiola trusts him to handle the ball. Including in the midfield. Other City defenders including Walker appear like want to boss him around. Probably because he's so young. I just learned he is 19 years old.

Guardiola also trusts Rico Lewis to come short for a corner kick, manage/handle the ball and pass it back to the corner taker for a follow up cross. Guardiola trusts Rico's technical, ball-managing, ball-distribution, and ball decision-making skills a whole lot. At least in the Brighton game.

Defensively, Rico Lewis appears to have good positioning and movement. Like he reads off-side positioning well. But he also does not appear to be a traditionally solid defender. As evidenced by that Brighton's goal. Not strong in duels and certainly not strong with heading the ball. But Guardiola seems to still like him a whole lot because of his technical, on-the-ball abilities.

He seems to have extreme confidence when it comes to getting/asking for the ball. Like he grew up as a super-talented midfielder. Not a left back. I've never watched him before tonight.

he had to foul because of his bad first touch. not sure whats brilliant about that.
same happened against sporting.

dont think he is playing well.

Loses every physical duel, sloppy in possession, never a defender. Largely at fault for both of their goals (especially second) and many others this season. A lot of people here have a soft spot for academy players, for Rico, and don't blame him for anything, and I am sure this time will be no different.

Nevertheless, he is exposed defensively every time we don't dominate. He is useful when we have 80%+ possession and attack for 90mins, otherwise, a massive liability. Once Pep leaves, I think it will be the end of Ricos City career.

Can't wait till we hammer Feyenoord (and on current form who knows) and people will be calling him a star again...we never learn. We need players to build our new (generation) team around, not to feed off the world-class players already here.

league 1 level defender and im being generous
This is potentially correct. But he is superb on the ball, which is why Guardiola plays and uses him. He would be a modern type of defender whose defensive skills will pick up as he matures. I think that's the idea Guardiola is working with and, if he is a local lad, the idea how he grew up over the last 4-5-6 years. And that would come from the Barcelona style of football. Technical ability above all else.
