82 | Rico Lewis - 2025/26

This thread has a terrible, terrible, Edghillesque whiff about it.
Rico was poor last night, as was nearly every player on the team.
He has given some excellent performances too, and is just 21.
There is no squad in world football with 22 superstars. We need squad players and emerging talents.
I, for one, am very glad that Rico Lewis is a part of the squad I support.

'Laughable', 'nothing player', 'Championship player'...get a grip.
We have some entitled cunts on here.

Lewis was hung out to dry last night with only one partner in midfield…(Nico)

I’m not sure even our great midfielders would have succeeded last night.

This was on Pep with a system that left the midfield outnumbered all night.
Rodri played alone for a year

I dont personally think he had any chance of impressing last night when literally every player around him seemed to think it was better to run with the ball until they got tackled.

Rodri played alone for a year
When was that ?….he always had De Bruyne, Gundo and Bernardo in the middle with him and in the season before his injury he also had Kovacic.

Nobody is claiming he is in the same league as Rodri…..however even the former Ballon D’or would have suffered in last nights set up.

Lol.

Rico Lewis is not good enough and last shown again for the umpteenth time.

"The lad is twenty years old and has come through the Academy. We're all rooting for him. But for the life of me, I can't see it. He's evidently not a defender, he isn't an attacker so he must be a midfield player. But he's not an attacking midfield player, he can't create for others or score himself and he's not a defensive midfielder because he is constantly bullied off the ball in the tackle and he's, to say the least, not aerially dominant. He's also the slowest twenty year old I've ever seen. I have to accept that Pep sees him as his best first XI option at the moment, but that, in itself, rings alarm bells for me"

The only thing that has changed in the last year is that Pep no longer sees him as his best first XI option. I think it's time he was moved on.

Yeh I'd love to see him pan out as much as the next guy but your post is spot on.

Lewis is another who would be absolutely fine if we were still the side of a few years back - as one of the very few lesser players in the squad who could occasionally come in and do a clearly defined, limited job in a well-grooved system. The Zinchenko role of just stepping in from fullback to go alongside the 6 (not further forward into the ‚pockets‘), and pop a few passes around in the build-up. Or coming on just as a body in midfield to give a rest to the big guns.
But there aren‘t really (m)any clearly defined roles any longer, or he doesn‘t fit them (e.g. he can‘t play right back like Nunes does). And he‘s one of countless lesser players in the squad who are all below what should be the standards for playing regularly.
