9 | Erling Haaland - 2025/26

Not sure this was posted here before. In the context of the discussion about his movement. Yeah in the box hes clueless. Hes maybe the best off ball striker on the planet in transition but in the box hes amateur level. Its crazy how this hasn't been corrected.

A lot of his issues with movement come from a lack of connection with his teammates and it's as simple as finding those connections and moving accordingly. He had a partnership with De Bruyne where he always went back post and De Bruyne always found him. Now he needs to mix things up a bit more depending on who has the ball. But you're right, it needs other players picking up the alternative run as well. That's what got Sterling so many goals, coming in off his wing to the far post. That's what Foden and Gundo have been excellent at over the years, arriving late and picking up that pocket of space behind Haaland, who will always attract the most attention.
I think this is it. There wasn’t much cohesion in our attacking play the season before last, and there was virtually none this past season. Just a constant churn of different shapes, systems and line-ups. Very hard to find those connections and rhythms.
Hopefully, we’ll be much more settled this season and there will be a chance for the key attacking players to learn to play together. If so, Haaland will score a(nother) bucketful.

In the box Erling Haaland is clueless.

I've read it all on here now!

Some of this looks bad. One positive is that it paints Doku in a way more positive light. He has been putting balls into dangerous spots but Erling reads everything Doki does as if he was Kevin abd expects a deep cross to the back post. Even when its not available, he fights to go get space at the back post. :(

You can read however you want or watch the video. Its pretty self explanatory.

It seems its not only Doku either, other players also have trouble finding him, but Doku manages to get in crossing positions more often so hes more present in these moments.

The video is a series of clips where he's gone the wrong way.

I could find thousands where he's gone the right way and scored, troubled the keeper or created chaos.
Im not worried about movement so much, hes getting chances, the worry for me is hes not putting them away. At all.

I think he'll sharpen up soon

No one has trouble finding him. He has the most shots every year in the premier league which would suggest he's being found.

With the additional point of we could find him much more if we played quicker!

There are too many clips and this is not nearly all of it. Obviously not all of his movement is bad, but the ratio of good vs bad movement is far from great.

His sense of positioning in the box has fallen off a cliff. from one of the best to one of the worst. Never ever ever in the right spot to be at the end of anything! There was a delicious one two between cherki and ait nouri at the end followed by a simple ait nouri cross to the back post for a tap in. Except he completely didn't anticipate it and stayed at the near post. I get not having chemistry with a new player but this is basic stuff. Time and time again he picks the wrong run.

In this position instead of running to the back post he decided to run near post in between the two defenders.

Even more baffling when you consider how often he ventures to the back post when he should come to the front post.

I think it's just a spell and he'll snap out of it. Especially with consistency of movement and crosses from each side.

Doku is unpredictable, that's the beauty of him BUT that means it's nearly impossible for Haaland to know where - or when - the ball is going to come in.

Whereas you'd think Ait-Nouri's openings will be mostly similar and he'll have a favourite spot to cross it to. A bit like when Haaland knew where Kev would put it and when.

the thing is he doesn't actually "run" to the backpost most of the time. He statically hides at the backpost behind a defender usually.. If he made more movement at the backpost that'd be one thing

How does he score so many goals, then?
The ball falls to his lap often enough due to possession overload with good passers and deflections and then you add the occasional vertical attack leading to a high percentage one on one an then penalties, the math just adds up.

I don't know about other posters but I am basically exclusively referring to his last 6 months. In which he's not scored so many goals at all. His movement and positioning has been diabolical. Before that it was elite and was the reason for his lethality.

Some fucking abysmal crossing in there as well.

The problem with Doku is that he came a year too late. That is, he came just at the moment when Gundogan left, and when he returned, he was no longer the same.
His crosses are unpredictable and Haaland himself cannot follow them all, but if there was a Gundogan from 2022 or 2023, we would score significantly more goals thanks to those late runs into the box. I hope that with Rejinders we will get that player again, someone who will buy the balls in the 16 that Haaland does not reach

True. But a lot of it seems like Erling not finding the open spot. And a lot of times its right there. In some of them i thought he saw it and was purposely pretending to go somewhere eles until the last second and then cut back to the open spot. Disappointingly, he often wasn't getting back to the open area. He seems to just have his preferred spots he likes attacking.

They'll figure it out though.

We need to put in far more early balls to him and Marmoush. We cant let that instinct atrophy. Glad between Phil, Cherki and RAN 4 early balls were put through in day bthe last game

Then he needs to get better at finding the open pocket and attacking the front post. He is gar better and more comfortable attacking the back post.
