Yes..... I am sick of just english life and want to move abroad and could do that with my job so learning another language could well be exciting......

Rosetta Stone (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.rosettastone.co.uk/</a>) is some software that you may want to look at, I have the Spanish version on my PC at the moment but my microphone is busted so I haven't been able to use it properly. Also, I've heard that Pimsleur (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.pimsleur.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.pimsleur.com/</a>) can be quite good but I've never really used it.

cheers for that i will have a look

i find other cultures and languages fascinating

Used Linguaphone for 2 or 3 languages and I find it the best self- teaching material for a good grounding. The Colloquial series is also pretty good.

Try to supplement with night classes, find somebody online for conversation classes or language exchanges to give you more realistic speaking practice. Then go live in a country where that language is spoken.

The above worked for me and I now speak a number languages fluently and others to a reasonable level.

The greatest help is always living in a country where the language is spoken as you are immersed in the language and have the motivation to keep going when things get tough.

Of course if you just want to live and work abroad, there are ways of doing that without necessarily having knowledge of any language other than English.
