A disappointment, but not a disaster

It was one of those nights tonight, a disappointment but certainly not a disaster.

We played a good side and we had key men missing. The manager put out an attacking side and I was pleased with the shape. Maybe a question mark about Zab at left back, with all those right footers around him.

For the first half hour I thought we were really good. We were aggressive and wrestled hold of the midfield. We could and should have scored. I haven't seen the highlights yet but the Tevez dribble sticks out, and some good balls in the box.

We were unlucky to concede with their first real attack. I felt there was no foul by Barry but Gleghorn on GMR was adamant there was a foul.

We had to change when IReland came off too. IT could be argued that RSC should have come on then and Tevez dropped deep but what he went for was still positive and gave us outlets.

IT took us until about 60 mins to take control again and there was some good buildup play, if maybe some poor deliveries. But we could have scored. The second goal killed us of course, on the break, and credit to Everton for scoring and it also, importantly, defending really well. I wish we'd never lost Distin, he still looks the business to me.

We're still right up there and averaging 2 points a game, which is what we need. 6 points from 2 hugely winnable games and we're right in the mix.

I don't feel blame needs to be apportioned for this. The home record was bound to go and it was kind of inevitable it would be like this - just one of those nights were nothing runs for you and it all runs for the opposition.

As an aside, I have to say I sat in a different part of the ground tonight, 102 instead of 328. It was a much more critical and there was much less camaderie. here was too much barracking going on for me at key points of the game. I bollocked some bloke in front of me for shouting, within earshot "You're fucking shit Barry". He wasn't the only one but he got the brunt of my rage. We were pushing for an equaliser, how is barracking going to help?

But anyway, I enjoyed the game in some ways but the result hurt and flattered Everton.

Superb post, that is football in a nutshell, it WAS one of those nights, and we are still in the hunt for 4th no matter what the whinging cnuts who claim to be fans but only post when we have a bad game say, they KNOW who they are!! ;)

Fair and reasoned assessment imo
I thought we came out of the blocks strong and worked hard to get control
Tevez might have scored when through (did Howard clip him?) and looke dto get flattened by the keeper minutes later.
Free kick for thier first looked harsh following on from a similar foul by Piennar on jonson...one of those nights in many ways.
Final ball went astray once too often tonight and the ball did not run for uson a few occasions. They defended very well when under the cosh and had a good spell for 10 mins second half and mugged us for the second goal...Vinnie should never have allowed rodwell to turn him on the line like that...over with now.
Heads up for Wigan when we can still go third if Utd do Spuds.
No Fat Lady Yet.

Of course it wasn't a disaster. A disaster would be an earthquake, a plane crashing, a volcano erupting, or Stevie Ireland leaving. This was none of the above, so we take it on the chin and move on.

Only 2 pts in it, and with Villa dropping pts in a gamethey must have had down as a banker it wasn't to bad.
Think of it this this way round:

Fulham 2 City 0

City 2 Everton 1

and we would have excepted those results, so for me nothing to worry about, rather lose tonight then then lose May 5th!!

When i read the thread title and saw Didsbury Dave was the poster, i thought he had come to his senses and changed his mind on Ireland leaving ;-)

I'll give you the earthquake and plane, but IReland leaving wouldn't be a disaster.

It would be Armageddon ;)

Agree with sentiments, saw a few things differently to yourself though as I thought we were thoroughly outplayed, we had a 10/15 minute spell after about 15 mins and same again early in second half but overall I thought Everton were simply the better side.

Distin looked class, shame we faced him when he appears to be 100% fit and in form.

Personally I feel Bob got it wrong tonight, I have been a big advocate of his tactics but we needed Rocky on from the start, regardless of his fitness we needed to get amongst them from the onset and tonight we couldn't.

Making the SWP sub when Stevie came off was an opportunity to put that right but he made imo the wrong call as he should have at least got Rocky on then - when he then got Rocky on he took off the wrong man in AJ but Bob took the easy option, why take off the man who gives the best delivery when you bring on the target man?

Overall though it is not the end of the world, Villa are wank and Spurs are riddled with injuries - they will get spanked when they play the top3.

Still fancy us for 4th, 3 points tonight would have been fantastic but now we just need to win our next 3 which is very achievable.

Wouldn't mind Arteta in a City shirt next year.....

What disappointing to me is the realisation that we still need several new signings to compete for possible top 4. Our results in alot games have been papering over the cracks including the 2nd half against Fulham but hey what do I know I heard fans saying we were fantastic all game.

Some actual honest assessments about the game at last.

Too many on here just do not watch the game and do not understand it.

We are lacking in certain areas as we all know, however we could have won tonight controlled the game for large periods and needed to score the first goal.

Everton have shown they are a decent side and effective in how they play especially when the get ahead, difficult to break down and dangerous on the counter.

We are still in a great position with a big weekend of games coming up.

I can understand all those sentiments and I think we can get winning quickly.

BRidge and LEscott would have made us more balanced.

Good post, I agree with everything you have said, I hate arseholes who have a go at the players, it just doesn`t help. Tonight i was also pissed of with the number of fans that left the ground after Evertons 2nd goal. Not a few but over half the crowd left. Is that what we are all about, the, no chance of winning so im off mentality. We should all stick with it and not do a runner when thing get a little tough.

The sad thing is Everton have a team who work for each other. We have a bunch of individuals who's minds are not at the races. Can anyone tell me what the fuck Bellamy was upto tonigh, drifting back into mediocrity?

A good report. I thought we started well, and were in control of the gaem, and got hit by a sucker punch. Didn't see what the free-kck was for, and I am not sure how it went in either. That gave everton something to hang onto, and they defended really well. we were left with too many forwards and not enough midfielders

I agree about Ireland's importance to City. We needed a midfield to open up their defence, or a late runner into the box, and Ireland is the onkly midfielder we have who can do that. It will be a very serious blow if he's out for more than a fortnight.

if we beat wigan, we can still do it

It will be nice to have Ade available on Monday, he would have made the difference tonight.

No we don't. We're right on the edge of the top four and have beaten all the top three, in a topsy turvy season of tumoil and injury, in lots of ways.

We're good enough to finish in the top four already. It's whether we can continue to blend as a cohesive unit

I was dissappointed in the crowd in general - zero atmosphere to lift the players which had we won would have been a great way to kick on.... very negative comments near us in South Stand 238 and no signing or shouting at all

Hope we do something about the atmosphere next season

agree with all other points

no its the end of the world. we definitely wont get 4th now. we should all just become united fans instead.

Good post there DD,

I thought Mancini made a mistake when he brought SWP on I would have brought on RSC. Johnson became ineffective when he went to the left.

We didn't get the rub of the green tonight, some things could have gone our way that didn't but thats the way it goes sometimes.

Fairplay to Everton they were well organised blocked everything and stopped any momentum building in our attacks. I'm just disappointed we didn't defend better this proves how much we missed Lescott and will miss Lescott imo.

Not a disastrous night by any means just very frustrating also showing the need for a better centre midfielder we need to move on and get back to winning ways.
