I know absolutely nothing about cars, and I'm about to buy my first one after passing my test recently. I learnt to drive in a Focus, which I much much much prefer to my wife's Polo. Thinking about getting a Focus or maybe a Golf.

It needs to be a suitable family car (got a small baby) which is reliable and not too expensive to run.

Oh, and I'm looking to buy 2nd-hand on account of being poor. Probably spending in the region of £10,000-£12,000.

Any advice much appreciated.

please dont spend £12000 on a ford focus or a vw golf, a complete waste of money
