A question for blues abroad

In the USA - There's a general belief that the USA should win everything. Not much thought to who else isn't winning something (like England hosting the world cup). Soccer matters to an increasing portion of the population but it's still very much second or third tier news.

Between NFL, Hockey, NBA, College football and college basketball, and the death of a famous baseball announcer - the award of the world cup games is barely a blip on the sports media coverage today.
Who was the baseball announcer? Wasn't the guy who read out the name for the yankies was it? I remember him being in bad health round the time when yankies where going to move stadium and a-rod or jeeter got him to record there names for days he couldn't work so they would still hear him announce them

Ron Santo with the Cubs. You can find the USA / Qatar news if you dig for it. But you have to dig. Lebron is bigger news. College basketball is bigger news. NFL playoffs are bigger news. Hockey is bigger news. College football is bigger news.

I live in the US but I think our bid was pretty arrogant. To expect to host the competition twice in thirty years when interest in the sport is admittedly low is ridiculous. Our only real argument was that it would get Americans interested... but it didn't work last time, we'll probably travel anyway, and wouldn't you rather see it in a country where the whole population was buzzing over it? personally would have liked it in Australia since i think qatar will embarrass themselves on the pitch, but I only feel a selfish sadness I won't be attending since we lost out as it would have been a bit sad if we won.

Irish blue here.

I thought FIFA were corrupt before and nothing has changed. Mind you so are the FAI and the FA so im not surprised.

Would have liked to see England get it though. Not just because it would be easier and cheaper to get to games but the Engish bid was the best i felt.

At least we had the world Lacrosse games in Manchester. no curruption in that game as far as i know. Thats because there is no money as stake.

Very low key here in Portugal didn't see a great deal about it before yesterday and even less today, though in all truth it was Spain that was running their joint bid.

Not much about the world cup in the danish news, its been pretty much dominated by the news, that Aramovichs son apparently wants to buy FC Copenhagen.

The coverage is pretty positive about Russia and somewhat negative about Qatar.

The consensus about the english bid is that you had the best bid but your bidding commitee bottled it by being a bit of a shamples.

Icelandic here, and I must ask, are you guys surprised Russia and Qatar won? Like, really? Because to me it has always seemed like FIFA were corrupt. Every single vote was probably bought.

The biggest selling paper in the country (i think) quite simply had the heading
"ROBBED". That sums it up and how we feel.
However the aussie rules supporting fraternity are quietly laughing to themselves. They were threatened that "wogball" would have taken over. But thats for another thread.
All Australians should be proud of the effort Frank Lowy put into the bid. I feel sorry for the man.

Hardly got a mention on French TV - 20 seconds just saying who won it and a little footage of the Russians celebrating. When you think about it we shouldn't be too surprised - FIFA are a bunch of corrupt tossers. They took the piss out of the Irish last year and now it's the English turn. The sooner Blatter & co move on the better it will be for world football.
