Taking out our long term injuries and new signing (Petrov, Bojinov, Johnson, Bridge), we have 4 players who have consistantly performed to a high level(Ireland, Robinho, SWP & Kompany), a few who have done it in patches (Zab, Garrido & Hart), a few youngsters (Sturridge, Evans, Caicado) who its not fair to rely upon. Then you have a whole load : Hamman, Elano, Fernandes, Ball, Vassell, Benjani, Dunne, Richards, Ben Haim, Schmeical and finallly Jo who have consistantly proved not upto the task whether it be through lack of talent, effort or both.
Out of a squad of 22 thats:-
4 - Star performers
3 - Inconsistent Players
4 - Promising but Inexperienced youngsters
11 - Players who aren't upto it and shouldn't be playing
We are going to have to sign around 5-6 top class players and around 5-6 Bellamys and Parker level players to even think about breaking the top 4. Whether Hughes is going to take us there is debatable, but the fact is nobody could with this current shower. The first 15 games of Sven's era masked a very big problem last season, and it is now we are finding our deficiencies out, the longer we give Hughes the more quality players he will and then and only then can it be judged his fault for the squads failings.
If we change regime again and go for a diffrent type of manager who wants flair players ala Keegan we'd be starting this all over again. Yes if we are still in the bottom half at the end of the season then the managerial position should be reviewed, but at the minute for me it looks like it's the squad that needs overhauling
