Listen...you smell something?
Right Boffins,

I have a laptop which works fine everywhere, at the in-laws, at my Brothers etc etc but as soon as it connects via wifi to my home network it sits in "Local Area Only" mode and refuses to connect online. It says it is but I can't get onto any por...websites I use.

It says my home network is unidentified.

Have tried most things recommended online and changed settings back and forth but to no avail.

Any suggestions oh wise wizards of the PC?

What have you tried to do?

What is your operating system?

Have you tried making your network get an ip address and DNS automatically?

Antivirus? which one are you using

Right,

It's a Dell laptop running Vista. I've obviously googled the issue and done what was suggested if it looks ok...

cmd line, re-booted the router, turned off the anti virus, turned it back on again, checked windows defender, the firewall etc etc.

Everything else connects without a problem in my house be it other laptops, the ipads, phones, tv, other PC's...

Some Dell laptops apparently have a button to turn the WiFi on/off. Does yours and have you managed to knock it off? (so to speak)

What is your router by the way?

There is a rather rambling thread here: <a class="postlink" href="http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-22999-not-able-to-connect-to-internet-by-wireless" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-2299 ... y-wireless</a> which has multiple ideas to try (presuming you haven't already been through this lot ;) ).

It says it's connected but in local mode only so I'm assuming it's switched on.

One of them BT ones. Infinity 2. (That's a guess).

Right...

Been down that list and nothing worked. The laptop is still stuck in local mode only. It connects to my network but then can't identify it. This is all rather annoying as it worked at my in-laws last week but doesn't here.

So it must be something to do with my router. Quite what I have no idea.

Go into your firewall settings....if set to Public change to Home / Office

Go here <a class="postlink" href="http://www.home-network-help.com/access-local-only.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.home-network-help.com/access-local-only.html</a>

If you face access local only problem in Windows Vista and fail to access Internet or other networking devices on home network, you can try following tips, maybe can help you solving the problem.
Of course I will assume you have installed the network card’s driver correctly, no matter it’s Ethernet network or wireless card. If you are not too sure on how to check network card’s driver status, check out this network card driver status article. If the driver is not installed properly, uninstall the driver and reinstall it. If possible, go to manufacturer’s website, download and install the latest driver.

Proceed to type ipconfig /all in command prompt (cmd.exe) and see whether it displays correct IP, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server info.

If it doesn’t display correct and valid IP, or just 169.x.x.x or 0.0.0.0, then I think you have configured the network card to obtain IP address automatically but it failed to obtain IP address somehow. You can try following:

- The BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is enabled by default in Windows Vista, but some routers do not support DHCP broadcast flag and so not able to assign IP address. You can follow the instruction here to disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista and test again.

- Ensure that you have enabled DHCP setting properly and configured big enough IP range to assign as well on router.

- Can try to manually configure IP address and other network info on network card and see whether it works.

- If you are using wireless router, go to router’s configuration page and check any enabled MAC address filter. If there is, ensure your wireless adapter’s MAC address is allowed to connect to wireless network.

- Recheck the network card or wireless card configuration and make sure everything is configured properly.

If your computer can access to Internet but will fall back to access local only error sometimes after waking up from standby mode or idling for certain time. You can try following tips:

- Windows Vista will power off network card when it’s in standby or sleep mode, but sometimes fails to activate the network card and connect to network after waking up. Therefore you can go to network card’s properties in Device Manager, go to Power Management tab and uncheck this feature and restart your computer: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

power management on network card

- Disable and then re-enable the network card.

- Disable IPv6 feature if you are not using it.

That’s it!! Hopefully this article can help you solving your problem. :)
