Advice ref Sharm el Sheikh

My 2 girls fly to Sharm el Sheikh on Sat, they are both a bit nervous as its their first holiday abroad.

They are staying at one of the Hilton hotel complexes, has anyone been and what can they expect. I am more concerned about them leaving the hotel area.

Any advice would be gratefully received ref their safety and the place itself from any fellow Blues that may have been.

Me and the missus stayed in sharm el sheikh about 4 years ago and the hotel (the Savoy) was fantastic and very welcoming as was the local town which is touristy and well policed.
However, go out of town and you soon realise what it's like to feel hated . . in the middle east we're seen as being the usa's murderous gimp.

Best advice is to keep to the hotel & grounds - it'll be beautiful and the hotel staff are trained to exude the love. If going out then get the hotel to order your taxi (don't ever flag one down), and if going out day or night then stick to the main town - because the security is excellent, and if they want to go walkabout then make sure that it's a tour organised by the hotel or the travel company.

Should be no problems if the smallest modicum of sense is applied because the egyptian tourist police lack all mercy in dealing with local issues and the local people are terrified of them for good reason (remember that the yanks rendition programme was largely based on sending political prisoners there for torture by the egyptian police . . nobody messes with them for fear of a fate that really is worse than death!).

In short; If they stick to the basics that you'd employ anywhere abroad then they'll have a ball out there and come home happy thereafter. Don't be put off by any stories you hear - just check the stats and you'll note that the murder rate is about 20 x as high in american and you probably wouldn't worry about them going to new york would you?

Thanks for the advice you provided, they are 2 sensible girls and ave no worries that way. I am sure they will have a great time but dads are dads and always worry.
Any idea how much 100 Eygption dollars is worth in our money?
 
Umm well i just asked a mate who goes regularly. What is the main purpose for the visit ?

He reckons as stated here you do NOT go out of your grounds or of the beaten track.

Be careful on the beach if they go on jet skis etc as the security for swimmers is poor he says.

Sorry bud these are his words not mine "to be honest if they were my daughters, i would not let them go if they just want to party, plenty of safer places. I know nowhere is safe but here is not for 2 young women alone really if they are after any sort of night life"

It's pounds and there were 10 to our pound when I was last there. Still the same I believe. So 1 Egyptian pound is worth about 10p.
 
badgering bastards you cant walk past a shop without getting it..
cover up if your going out would be a good idea for two girls.
its the same down in Hurghada stick to the complex and the local tourist shops
treat it like a beach holiday,....
 
Stayed at the hilton fayrouz in naama bay a few times, Great hotel and location there was another Hilton behind it .. not sure which one ..all inclusive though
They will be safe I would have thought but I Have to say I think 2 girls will get thoroughly pestered by all and sundry .. possibly even in the hotel .. one of my friends went , a single mum with her kiddy and the omelette chef at her hotel stalked her all week .. she ended up complaining to the management .... wasnt a hilton though
 
I'm going on Sunday for two weeks, are they blues? They can watch the Wigan fulham and Napoli games with me and mrs back.
 
They have hotels there now? when I was there the best place to stay was with the Bedouin (if you could find them) on the beach, we used to stock up with Israeli Vodka before we went, and swap it with them for hash.

But that was 30yrs ago, guess it has changed a lot.

I should add he is a bit of a geek and the constant harassment to go to restaurants will have unnerved him. He likes hiking and shit.

He did add that he nearly chinned a waiter though as he went for a piss he saw the fucker go straight over to his missus and try it on. I left that out as i thought it may be a one off, but reading this thread it seems a recurring issue.
 
Main downside for me was a dodgy belly and a queue at the chemists from everyone else that had the same problem. On the plus side, I lost some weight.
I think it was safe though, but didn't go far from the hotel. Was fed up with hassle to buy stuff.

That's the main problem is the hassle when you leave the hotel grounds.If you fancy a change there is some good English pubs that show all the games.Getting there though is a nightmare,due to the locals wanting your custom.Stay clear of all the local shops and use the supermarket where everything is priced,on no account go into a street shop.
 
Went to sharm this time last year, as people have mentioned its ok when you get into naama bay town its just shit loads of people pecking your head to go into their shop/restaurant, ignore them! me and the bird i was with got locked in a shop and I had to become a bit rude to let us out, they will offer free goods etc to get you into their shop, and they will need to know how to barter or prepart to get ripped off royally (restaurants are fixed price though).

with regards to getting taxis via hotel they take the piss abit, on our first night they charged us 80 egyptian into town via hotel, but the rest of the week i just spoke to the guard at hotel entrance he got a taxi then we haddled down to 30 egyptian pounds.

Currency exchange rate is better when over there, it was 7.5 egyptian pound to the english pound over here and about 8.5 over there so your 100 egyptian pounds is about £15 worth.

If they are near naama they will no doubt want to go to pasha, it is expensive to get in and expensive when you're inside aswell but it's good.

When they are in the airport there will be people giving promo packs out, make sure they get one each they have discount books in them and get great offers in the restaurants and excursions.

I really enjoyed it there would reccomend it to most people.

Edit: No offense to those who like it but from what i have heard id have hated it.

I mean Gran Canaria was bad enough, lock me in a shop and i admit it, id go fucking nuts mate, blood would spill...ok prolly mine but fuck it :p

basically you walk down the street they will put their hand out for you to shake and start talking to you, on one occassion i think it was the 3rd night, we started talking to them and me and the bird ended up being talked into going into this shop then they were on about giving us free gifts, I was saying no, they tried to get the bird to sit down to which I said come on we are going quite aggresivly to make sure they got the point I tried to open the door which was locked and I basicly said "get that fuckin door open now, what the fuck do you think you are doing" I am 6'4" and at the time was in good shape so they didnt take long to oblige and apologise about repeatly
