AFC Bournemouth (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Second half of the season we've been good enough, once the new additions and January signings kicked in.

Played them 3 teams and unbeaten, destroyed em twice.

If the second half season form continues into next season we'll be clear favourites.
Yup. Our record in the league since January 1st is:

P19 W10 D8 L1 (38 points)

Need to turn a few of those draws into wins but we're definitely on the right track.

Our record after 37 games under Pep:

16/17 season: 75 points
17/18 season: 97 points
18/19 season: 95 points
19/20 season: 78 points
20/21 season: 83 points
21/22 season: 90 points
22/23 season: 89 points
23/24 season: 88 points
24/25 season: 68 points
25/26 season: 78 points

Currently tracking above the 16/17 season and level with the 19/20 season.

OMG, can't believe the sense of entitlement on here you would think we were rags in the 90s. We have just won f*****g FA cup. One of the most prestigious trophies in the football world. We added that to the League Cup, which I had to dine out on for 35 years. To whine about a draw at in form Bournemouth less than 3 days after a cup final is ridiculous. We showed our never say die spirit by equalising deep into injury time. Why in the world were ourselves and Chelsea expected to play on Tuesday rather than Wednesday? To win the league on top of the cup double was always the longest of long shots. Let's party on Sunday and Monday and celebrate a fantastic season with Pep going it may be a while before we can celebrate again. Thanks Pep and the boys for a great season and rubbing rags and dippers noses in our success.

Following the recent Arsenal match, I wrote that whatever happens in the end, I will applaud. That's where I stand. Zero complaints from the team, the boys did their best, clearly overachieving...

As for the club's management, the following are well known facts before a ball is even kicked:
- Zero or very little rest / preseason, 6 years in a row.
- Every team will raise their game playing against us, we are their WC Final.
- Zero protection from refs, constantly fucked from officials during the last 10 consecutive seasons.

All the above (as well as other data) should be considered as input in the procedure of designing your strategic plan. They never have. Never. On the contrary, what we have witnessed is the development of a culture within City's hierarchy: Don't worry, take it easy, Pep will find a solution. He has indeed, provided solutions to every fucking kind of limitations, you name it. It doesn't make the club right though. It's exactly the "logic" that brought us where we are today...

If I start summarising the "highlights" of the season, this post will never end. Just to make a point:
- Arsenal away (draw): Same lineup for 3rd consecutive match in the space of 7 days, the team a moving hospital. We could hardly walk, never mind run. Nevertheless the manager had to wait until 87' to bring Savio on, apparently he could not trust the boy in such a stadium, in such a game -and he was right, of course. At the same time, his colleague had the luxury of bringing players like Saka, Eze (HG, apparently considered surplus for City), Martinelli, from the bench. No comment...
- Villa away: We started with Oscar Bob. Oscar Bob does not start for Emery's team. He simply doesn't. In fact, Oscar Bob does not have a place in Emery's bench, at that moment of time. In 2, 4, 6 months, after 1 year, who knows? We'll never find out. You see, the club decided it wasn't worth waiting for Oscar's progress any more, he's no longer with us. By the way, we also started with Savio and Reijnders in midfield, in that match. But we're never getting those points back. No further comment...
- Newcastle away: Working with Pep, Nico G has shown clear signs of improvement. We do not win without him vs Bournemouth, as well as vs Liverpool at home, earlier in the season. And then we travel to St James' Park. Were we fucked by the ref? Absolutely. Fact remains, however, that Nico G does not start ahead of Guimaraes, neither does he start ahead of Tonali, in Howe's team. We lost there. No further comment...

I can go on and on and on, the thing is, I cannot explain such stuff. We are supposed to compete against the very best, domestically - abroad. How can this be possible for a club like City? Not Wolves, not WH, not Southampton. But City. Has our mission statement changed? Is our primary objective to develop players, and win something, if possible? If that's the case, no problem. But if we are aiming to fight for every fucking trophy in 4 (FOUR) fucking competitions, every fucking season, then this is bizarre. This is wrong, period. Because, guess what, I am not going to blame kids, it's not their fault. Young players need time. But, you see, History does not wait for you. History will indeed punish you for disrespecting football at the highest level. I mean, even the ones who have made gigantic steps forward under Pep, like NOR, for example. Remember Chelsea's equalizer at home, in injury time? Inexperience costs, I'm sorry. Especially when combined with fatigue, it can prove to be fatal...

We have been playing football in slow motion for years. Emphasising on control, keeping the rhythm as slow as possible. Keeping the ball, basically. So that opposistion does not have it. If they do, they will run, we cannot follow. We cannot run, we cannot accelerate. It becomes existential for us: Runnings are prioritised, "we rest with the ball" (Pep's words). Yet, instead of reflecting on how the fuck 4 in a row (treble included) was even possible in the framework of such a strategy, clowns and trolls will keep asking for a higher pace in our game, will keep asking for direct football, and so on. Nonsense. We cannot do it. We cannot afford to even try it. This is not 2017-18, I'm sorry. Circumstances have changed dramatically...

Lessons have not been learnt by the club's management. We operate in the most demanding league in the world, and we are at war, on - off the pitch. Our planning needs to be perfect. Which means:
- Individual quality matters.
- Size of the squad matters.

Are we willing to finally learn? Until we do, let's enjoy that **** in London celebrating the following days. That **** and the anti-football he represents. Last season was a gift to Slot and Liverpool, this season it was Mikel's and Arsenal's turn...

PS: If I could speak directly to Pep: You know what's going on. You know exactly what's going on. Do not give them the satisfaction.
You know what to do. So does your Chairman.

I think we let ourselves down and lost this title, should have won this at a canter post Feb

Overachieving? Not at all. It’s fine margins. Still carrying some older injury-prone players and the schedule has been difficult. Reijnders and Gonzalez must be wank in training to not even get a look in.

Just watching the replay now and the tactics today looked good. Bournemouth were fresh and could have run us ragged but we broke up their play.

Once again, the only player that disappointed me was Semenyo. He’s just shit on the ball.

Obviously buzzing with the point, confirming European football for the first time in our clubs history. I think we really did deserve the win, though. We should’ve gone 2-0 up about 3 separate times in the second half, but the goal that you probably deserved on the balance of play did eventually come.

I was confident of the win for large parts of the game, so it’s a bit of a shame we couldn’t have pushed Liverpool for 5th (I personally think Brentford are going to beat them, so it was definitely on). I think we deserve Champions League, personally, but c'est la vie.

The title wasn’t lost today for you; not to be smarmy, but we are a pretty good team on our day and we’re now unbeaten in 17. It was games like Everton and Spurs that have done you in for the title. If you’d beaten any of those teams from advantageous positions, I stand by my prediction that Arsenal would have bottled it in the end. I don’t even think you played badly at all, tbh, I thought it was a good game against an elite team that was probably running on fumes. There’s really no shame in that.

I’m just a tinpot fan of a tinpot club at the end of the day, but I think you should all take this moment to reflect on what a phenomenal decade you’ve all had. As a neutral, Pep has been a joy to watch (the oddball that he is). Champions League, 6 PL titles, a treble, 4 in a row. How many of you would have thought that would happen 15 years ago?! It doesn’t really get any better than that. I would be very, very surprised if you don’t win another title or CL in the next couple of years.

Congratulations on European football. You deserved at least a draw tonight. Pushing Liverpool all the way for the Champs League slots is a credit to your Club.

Savinho was excellent and we had a very good chance to win it in the last minute if Cherki hadn’t got in Rodri’s way.

Good post.
I think you deserved the win.
I thought you were great and we were poor, especially in terms of energy levels.
Probably cos we played a few days ago and you didn’t.
Not an excuse but it was definitely a factor.
Like I said I think you deserved the win.
On a side note you forgot centurions and the domestic clean sweep you cheeky sod : )

I was always surprised how a lot of people here thought this game was going to be a sure win and then title would be decided on last day. I always thought our run in was extremely difficult and this was going to be the outcome. Some posters are absolutely delusional, especially @Danny Tiatto
Wow look everyone we have Mr Harry Hindsight here who appears to have found his voice after the match.

You thought we wouldn’t even be in a position to challenge for the title a couple of months back so you have no right at all to come on here trying to take cheap shots at supporters who actually tried getting behind the team

You are a disgrace of a supporter

You were constantly insulting anyone who said we wouldn't win the league. So don't be surprised when it bites you in the arse. Maybe in the future, instead of showing you are a know-it-all, try not to insult others who have a different opinion.

Nothing tinpot about your side this season. You have been fantastic. Enjoy Europe and I hope you can keep this side together for a few years.

I was trying to keep moral high amongst the supporter base and we came within a couple of very shady VAR decisions from getting over the line.

Supporters like yourself who naturally have negative outlooks need to be called out and I don’t regret my approach at all.

Need to be called out?

Who do you think you are to assume your opinion on all things is correct?

You are demonstrating a personality disorder, in my opinion.

Long time City fans are still naturally pessimistic, it’s a defence mechanism & has also become a good luck mindset. Assume we’ll win the hard games and mess up the easy ones.

Maybe try leaving people to their own thoughts and opinions?

Kind of feels like we expended a lot of emotional energy in the run up to the Arsenal league game and, combined with Rodri's injury, we haven't played as well since. Think the confluence of short turnaround, the Pep news, the selection and the ability/energy/rest of Bournemouth led to that flat performance from us. Ah well
