After 23 games in 2011/12

Our goal difference is worth a point, so we are even on points to our title winning season.

We had a great goal difference then, and of course it did prove decisive.

It's a factual comparison and you are right each season is different. This Season we have already had our bad spell - we lost four of our first ten games and three of those were against sides that are basically shit.

In the title winning season our bad spell came when Yaya went to Africa, Vinny got injured and Barry and Milner were practically dead on their feet.

Pretty sure that Arsenal and Chelsea haven't had a poor run of form yet.

If nothing else it suggests we're on target, demonstrates how far Utd have fallen, and reminds everyone of the twists and turns to come.

Had a look at last season after 23 games, and Utd had 3 more points, yet I remember them being relatively poor for most of the season.

The one thing that irritates me this season is that we don't have as many points as we should have give the quality of our play. Those early season away games were very costly, and I still maintain largely unfortunate

The rags are always better the 2nd half of the season ;)

If we had just not conceded that howler of a goal in the last minute at Stamford Bridge we would be 6 (7 with goal difference) points above Chelsea. 10 (11) with a win on Monday. Ifs...... of course.

And our goal difference in 2011/12 was +41 only one less than our current GD. So even steven on giving both respective sides an 'extra point'.
(BTW we have to beat Chelsea by 3 goals to keep in front of the 2011/12 team...)

It's what happens in the next two months that counts.
Back in 2011/12 we slipped 8 points behind the rags

And of course every season is different, but 89 points ALWAYS wins the title. The exception being the runners-up in 2012 - apparently they lost on goal difference.
Therefore, if we match that total, that means 1 more defeat and three draws from now on. Ignoring the 'one game at a time' mantra, our hardest away games all come towards the end, but by then we may have established an advantage that will lead to others losing the will to fight for the league, merely scrap over Champs League places.

Alternatively, if we win all our home games, that means we will need a maximum of 12 points from 7 away games.

Simple. Only we know it won't be. The league could come down to a last day fight between the best team in the land and all the world and the team led by a manager everyone hates. City having a seemingly easy fixture against a relegation threatened team that have already conceded 12 goals against the boys in blue this season, what could go wrong?

we're better off in terms of being a pt ahead of 2nd place.

Worse off in terms of being more than 2 teams "in it". though it will be a 2 horse race.
