Air conditioning in a car

I went and got myself a new car a few days ago, a Peugeot 206, and as soon as I switch off the air conditioning button, the windows steam up. And they really steam up, very quickly

Does anybody know why?

Informed answers as to what the problem is will be much appreciated.

Air con recirculates the air around the car. If you switch the air con off but don't deselect the recirc option the moist air then steams up your windows. Switch it off then select your air intake to from outside the vehicle. That's my guess anyway :-)

I had a similar problem in one of my fleet once. There should be a button that will currently be pressed down/on. This means that it simply re circulates the air within your car and keeps it at a set temp rather than cooling freah air.... consult your manual and it should be simply fixed.

When the air-con's on it makes the windows really cold, so when you switch off, any moisture will condense out as soon as it hits the cold glass... Like on a very cold morning... You need warm/dry air or air-flow to warm up/clear the glass.

But why on earth do people in this country use fucking air-con at all??? We get about 3 days a year, if we're lucky, when it's necessary... The rest of the time it's just a waste of fuel and money.

I have it on my car but have literally used it a handful of times only... On econ the rest of the time... Y'know like the good old days when if it was cold you diverted warm air from the engine and if it was warm you'd open the window (also good for getting rid of moist air and clearing your windows)

Current air-conditioning systems can reduce the fuel economy of high fuel-economy vehicles by about 50% and reduce the fuel economy of today‘s mid-sized vehicles by more than 20% while increasing NOx by nearly 80% and CO by 70%

20%... That's pretty significant to anyone's budget!

i always find it funny people looking for air-conditioning in cars in england, i mean you don't need it over here - just wind down your window and you'll get cool again - tis a stupid idea

Nobody anywhere "needs" it. But there again we don't need to listen to music while we're driving either so why have a stereo system based on that logic?

In the summer, it's nice to stay cool when its red hot outside even if it only for a few days of the year. I'm looking forward to travelling in a bit of comfort. My car idles at about 8000 revs, if I turn the air con on it rises by about 2000 revs. You'll save more fuel by better driving, monitoring your tyre pressures and who's to say that having windows open doesn't affect your fuel consumption more by cocking all those well researched aero dynamics up?

You see, this is what happens when you have night after night of the BBC news blathering on about their 2 favourite subjects, the environment and the credit crunch. We are all being thoroughly brainwashed.

I have the re-circulation button/switch turned to off, so fresh air, if there is such a thing, is entering the car.

It does'nt matter what the weather is doing, within a few seconds of switching off the AC, the windows steam up very badly.

I'm trying to drive with the air con switched off, but I can't. I need to see where I am going!

And as for Jeremy Clarkson, what does he know about little people in ordinary cars?
