Aircon

I open up the loft door in the landing upstairs when it gets stuffy in the bedrooms, and all the hot air rises and escapes into the roof/attic.

Otherwise a portable Meaco air-con unit is a godsend.

Can’t imagine life without them over here but not sure I’d be too arsed with having them in the uk. Mine worked out at about 700€ each.

All good points but it's simply not that hot in this country.

We had a couple of absolute scorching weeks last year where air con would've been nice but I don't think you can justify it for 2 weeks a year.
Fair doos. Just as an add on they also do hot in winter and it only takes about 10 minutes to bring a room up to temperature. I would say I get about 15 weeks usage per year out of mine which is a lot higher than 2.

Well regulated curtain and open window regiment normally controls our house enough, the skylights can get a little much in the really hot month

Pretty much worked in the HVAC industry all my life.
If I lived in England I would rip out the gas central heating and install 3 or 4 Split system AC units like yours.
Not only do they give nice relief in summer during a hot and humid spell, you can use them all winter for heating.
They are the most efficient form of heating giving a COP of between 3 & 4, that means for every kilowatt of energy they use they give out 3 to 4 kw of heat, depending on outside temperature. (an electric fire gives a COP of 1)
They do this by working in reverse.
If you got solar panels on your roof they would be very cheap to run.
You get instant heat which is better than waiting for water filled radiators to heat up.
They come in all shapes and sizes, I think Daikin do one that looks like a painting on the wall.

As for the OP question, I'm not sure what brands you have in the UK but the last company I worked for used to rent them out for emergency situations and the brand was always De'Longhi, so I would recommend those.
