So the other options are to do absolutely fuck all and withdraw all support and humanitarian aid to the areas involved. I disagree, you may be right about not defeating it in terms of destroying a belief, you can however certainly degrade the potential to do harm, ISIL is a monster that has gotten out of control, it is also naive to think that the vast majority of it's so called members are actually hard core jihadists, the majority in Iraq appear to be made up of disaffected ex Baath party members and ex Iraqi militery personnel who were dismissed by the previous regime, in Syria it's slightly different, they have been on a roll since getting their hands on a good proportion of the Iraqi armies hardware it won't last forever and the arms that are flooding into Kurdistan will soon see large parts of Northern Iraq liberated, they will be squeezed into teh middle of Iraq in a few month
