Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

Thanks for all the feedback to my original post. I’ve read all the comments and suggestions, using them to come up with the following set of guidelines (which are copied in page #1).

1. The object is to come up with a list of 10-12 albums in early December. We’ll have a vote and crown the Album of the Year 2022.

2. We will do this by nominating albums as the year progresses. There are currently no limits on how many albums or how often any one member can nominate.

3. Albums must be new material released this year. EPs are allowed, but no compilations, best-ofs, DJ mixes or live performances of previously released material.

4. To help me, maybe you can make it obvious you are putting forward a nomination (NOMINATE), but hopefully anything you write will be obvious and I’ll pick it up and add it to the list on page #1.

5. I will maintain a list of albums on page #1. I will also record members’ reactions to each album.

6. We will initially use a three-point scoring system, which I want to keep simple for now:-
  • MISS – You’ve listened, it’s not for you or not quite good enough for a vote.
  • HIT – You’ve listened. and you like it.
  • BULLSEYE – That special category where you love the album and HIT doesn’t quite seem enough.
Ratings can be posted in a standard post on the thread. If you comment on an album but don’t assign one of the three ratings, I’ll assign a rating based on what you said.

7. There is no pressure to listen to every nomination, but if you’re playing along, make sure you listen to enough of them. Similarly, there is no pressure to listen to a nomination the week it’s added but try to aim for some feedback within two months of the album being added.

8. With the above in mind, I may separate out “qualifiers” or “eliminated” two months after the album was added.

Hopefully the above guidelines will satisfy those wanting to keep it simple and also those wanting some kind of vote. This is how we’ll start the ball rolling, but the watchword here is flexibility. If I need to make adjustments for the smoother running of the thread, I will do.

With that, I’ll look forward to what musical gems people come up with. I’ve started the table by adding three albums I’ve been listening to, plus an album and an EP that have been mentioned already in this thread. I’ll post my thoughts on all of these on a separate post.

NOMINATIONS

Strictly a One-Eyed Jack - John Mellencamp
Resist - Midnight Oil
Sinners Shrine - Dean Owens

Regular members on the Album Club thread will be amused that my first two choices are by the same two artists I've nominated so far, but what can you do when two of your all-time favourite artists release a new album in the first few weeks of the year? Mellencamp's is his best in years and immediately gets the BULLSEYE treatment. Midnight Oil's offering is their first in twenty years. It's a terrific blast of ECO-themed passion and some of the guitars on this album are sublime, but I'll hold back and rate it as a mere HIT for now.

Dean Owens is a Scottish singer-songwriter who went to Arizona to record an album with Calexico (who will no doubt feature on this thread later in the year). A nice desert noir sound with some good songs and worth a listen - I'll rate it a HIT.

I've also added a couple of albums/EPs that have already been mentioned in this thread:-

Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You - Big Thief
Old - Alix Page

Big Thief are a new band to me, but I've had a couple of listens to their new album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. The album is almost as long as the title, but there are some enjoyable songs on there. I like the gentle acoustic production and the range of sounds and songs is impressive, but like any album that's 20 tracks long, it could have done with a bit of editing. Neverthesless, I'll be listening some more and it's definitely worth a HIT rating.

I also had a listen to Alix Page's Old EP and I didn't think it was anything special, so it's a MISS from me.

Having joined the album review thread too late to listen to and rate your John Mellencamp nomination I’ll make up for that by giving his new one a listen although I suspect it might not be my cup of tea.

Having joined the album review thread in time to listen to and rate your Midnight Oil nomination I will probably give the new one a miss.

I listened to the Dean Owens a few weeks after having my interest piqued by a review in Uncut and enjoyed it and made a mental note to go back to it so must have been a HIT. I did start listening to some of his back catalogue and kind of lost interest in him but I will give the new album another listen and see if the first impressions are backed up.

OK, just to be clear. I will only score a HIT/MISS/BULLSEYE when somebody listens to an album.
As noted, there's no pressure to listen to every or any nomination.

I think I've understood what you've said, so I won't add anything in for any of these until you've listened. Hope that makes sense.

EDIT: Sorry I've just re-read and noted that you did listen to the Dean Owens album.

Sorry I see what I did there, slightly confusing language. I’ll blame the lack of coherence on having done a night shift.

Just listening to the Dean Owens again while I come round from insufficient sleep. Liking the western vibe on this. If that’s what it is
