Aleksandar Kolarov

Kolarov was a victim of his own strengths under both Mancini and especially Pellegrini. he was a real asset going forward, so much so that both those managers played Spanish Dave left side of midfield allowing him to roam inwards constantly because Kolarov was always there to act as a left winger.

The down side came when he was then left 2v1 almost constantly when defending or in later years when Silva was brought inside he was caught up field with no cover because he was following instructions as the man to offer width for the side. Clichy was victim to this too but to a lesser extent as he had more recovery pace and he was very reluctant to push forward as instructed.

Most people naturally tended to blame the left back when we was caught out when infact under that kind of system it was generally the covering midfielder that should have been there (De Jong/Barry in the early years and then Fernandinho later who was expected to cover half the bloody pitch covering fullbacks and yaya)

Kolarov, just like Clichy has been very very good for us over the years. It's no coincidence we haven't replaced them until now over the course of multiple title winning seasons

I've seen Zab being played as a left back in preference to Kola many times. I've never seen Kola being picks as a right back. I don't dislike Kola but at their respective peaks I know which one I would choose for my team.

Just out of sheer curiosity, when was Kolarov's peak?

Reckon he'll stay tbh. If we get Danilo I can't see us splashing out on Bertrand as well as Mendy. Not sure there's CB on the way either so it figures kolarov will be kept as a bit of unspectacular extra cover for both those positions. Have seen people mention Danilo can cover leftback but doesn't sound as though he's done very much of that?
