Alen Halilovic - remember this name

City and United have both been put on alert after Barcelona's move for Alen Halilovic was thrown into doubt by news of a transfer ban.

The Spanish side have been handed a year-long transfer embargo by FIFA, having been found guilty of breaching rules regarding the signing of young players.

Halilovic's transfer from Dinamo Zagreb was never under investigation but, as the move was agreed outside of the transfer window, it is uncertain whether it will go through in the summer.

The 17-year-old, who has been dubbed "the next Lionel Messi" by a number of observers, already has three senior Croatia caps to his name.

He made his debut for Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 16 years and 112 days, and has played a prominent role in the club's first-team setup since, despite his tender years.

A number of Europe's big-hitters were believed to be chasing his signature prior to Barca announcing a €2.2m deal and five-year contract had been agreed in March.

But, with FIFA's sanctions coming down with immediate effect, it is uncertain whether the deal can now go through.

That could prompt a secondary fight for Halilovic's signature, with United and City likely to get involved among a number of top European sides.

Barca could also see a move for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen blocked, despite suggestions that a deal has already been agreed.
