Yes. A few venues have come and gone in that spot since it was a toyshop. 90s it was 'Mo Mos - which we thought was owned by Mick 'Simply Rag' Hucknall back then. They can't have been too fussy on the door as I remember going to see a mate DJ upstairs there and he couldn't have been older than 15 at the time. Now a two storey shisha bar
Alex Donaldson's was my dad's shop at 777 Hyde Road, he bought it in 1960,and was there until 1972 when he sold it to my uncle. In 1964 he opened another shop on the corner of Newton Street and Manchester Road (Next to the bus station) and called it Hyde Sports centre, He sold that also in 1972 to a cousin of mine, and moved to Bournemouth to open another sports shop which Ted M'cDougall later bought just before he moved to United,My first City kit came from Donaldson’s in Hyde. My dad knew Donaldson’s from Gorton and years later I discovered that Donaldson was an ex-City player. Lots of former Lancs CCC or City players opened sports shops including Billy Meredith.
Had the Aurora, Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman figures and you had the option to replace the head and hands with a glow in the dark alternativeThe Sports Depot on Princess road!
The hours my childish nose spent pressed up against the window looking at the arrays of toy soldiers assembled, or the latest Dinkys displayed. Then later it was Airfix kits. There was also a model shop on Claremont road that sold esoteric Aurora and Revell model kits, way out of my price bracket.
Cooke’s around the corner on John Dalton St. Got my first pair of screw in stud boots from there. Can’t remember what brand they were but they were five quid which was probably half my Dad’s take home pay for the week.Tydesley and Holbrook were superb, especially their January sale, I used to camp outside the shop the night before along with many others.
Got my first pair of Puma Royals from them and was served by David "Bumble" Lloyd.
Ernest Tydesley (part Owner) was a big star of Lancashire in the 50s and I am sure he was on the LCCC committee in the 70s, hence why he had a lot of the players helping out in the off season.
