He would do more damage to the Tories being left where he was.
Sometimes, the country’s immediate need transcends what is good for any opposition. This is one of the things Tories are blind to.

Johnson had to go asap to try and protect what is left of out international standing and resuscitate morality and truth.

His leaving also stops the bullshit about Brexit getting done and we can now begin to have adult conversations as to how best to stop the financial bleeding from it and discuss how not to break international law.
 
It’s the last throw of the dice to buy him more time. Thing is if he can’t form a government, how can he stay on for any length of time?

I doubt the party will let it happen, he's already indicated he's willing to do absolutely anything to remain, he remains pretty dangerous to them and potentially the country.

Probably the biggest substantial win here is putting a reasonably responsible person in charge of that.
