I think Evans stands somewhat in contradiction to your other statement about spending big. I also seem to remember a Pep quote of buying players who will stay for years. Putting 2 and 2 together I hope this means we will look to buy the real thing only and not stop gap solutions (like I think Evans will be).

West Brom are asking £30m for Jonny Evans - I consider that big - excessive in fact!

When you put it like that, £70m for VVD might not not be overpriced at all!!

Don't we have it already?

Stones and Otamendi is an absolutely outstanding partnership.

Someone like Evans just gives us more breathing space until we find the right prospect.

There is a World Cup next summer and plenty of opportunities will present themselves.

you don't spend £30m on breathing space for 6 months. You spend £30m on a guy who's going to play an important role for 3 years. No point buying Evans and then wanting to get rid in 6 months because we don't have a spare HG spot and we want the next big young thing who's now 3 times more expensive because of the WC, rather than buying them now and giving them a challenge.

Yeah 30 million is unbelievable for Evans. Having thought a bit let me rephrase my opinion. I sincerely hope the days of buying stop gaps are over. If the boss says he wants Jonny F. Evans for 30 million, because he is the right guy as CB for the next 3 years, then I am prepared to accept the superior knowledge of the genius. With my own modest knowledge of the game I personally would not go for JFE, but then who am I? Whatever happens let's get behind Pep and the player he buys. We certainly need reinforcements on the CB and LB position. On CB we are short now with Stones and Kompany out, and regarding LB Delph getting injured is not beyond comprehension. Whatever we do in January will show our ambition regarding the Champions League this season. Imagine going against Real, Barca, PSG or Bayern with Mangala and Danilo. Not a very reassuring thought in my humble opinion.

Alexis Sanchez will snub January offers to join Manchester City on a free transfer next summer. Alexis will get a signing-on fee and contract that equates to £325,000-a-week plus image rights worth another £75,000-a-week. [Mirror]

Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has been involved in a major bust-up with his team-mates, who are increasingly frustrated by the Chilean’s poor attitude.
