The thing is I don't think the wages would have been anywhere near that if we hadn't fucked around. If we'd gone to Arsenal on 1st January, paid the £35 million they wanted Sanchez would have been at our place on the 2nd ready and eager to sign whatever contract we put in front of him. It was us fucking about, playing chicken with Arsenal over the fee that allowed the rags to put their hat in the ring. We've fucked this.

I totally agree and if I was in Sanchez's position and with the pissing around maybe lost patience.

It's not half the price, though.

Everything adds up to about the same or more than the £60mil we would have paid in summer.

Agent's fee is more than 15mil, Sanchez's signing on fee is more than 15mil , arsenal are getting 30mil ....

Sanchez had agreed to 250k/w from us and now getting 400 from United.

The whole thing is way more expensive than would have been had he moved to us in the summer.

Sam from Goal is spot on......if we have to go and spend 80-100mil on another forward in the summer, this makes no sense.

If City are willing to let Sanchez join United due to the price of the total package (which would be about £40m in fees, plus wages which were agreed) then they must be thinking of their perception of value, rather than cost. They’ll do very well to find a cheaper alternative.

And by value versus cost I mean this: they must have decided it’s not ‘worth’ paying £40m-odd to Arsenal and agent, but it is worth paying £100m at least for another player (insert your own names). That, or simply they’ve been caught on the hop and have absolutely no say in it.

I think he's wrong on this. Surely the whole point is that the wages are no longer agreed? We had an agreement with him but now someone has supposedly come in and offered him double and the goal posts have shifted. Let's put it this way, if Sanchez is happy to stick to the wage agreement he has with us despite united offering more then he will still come to us.

Didn't Simon Mullock intimate that we may have had our eye on someone else anyway? That might explain our willingness to let this one go if the numbers aren't stacking up.

Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see if we do go for anyone else this window.

One slight positive to come out of this is that United are unlikely to be in for another attacker in the summer, so we’ll hopefully avoid any bidding wars with them whoever we target.

It makes sense if the alternative option is a few years younger than Sanchez and also not expecting £400k per week in wages. Sam Lee isn't spot on about everything these days.

45mil (fees) and 400k a week on 3year deal (example) (43mil in wages).....88mil total. Sanchez will still be at his peak for the next 3 years. I dont think we would find a better forward in the summer, that gives us the same flexibility for any cheaper!
