Alexis Sanchez

Re-posting because I’m not sure how many people grasp this.

Not to mention being held to ransom.

Sanchez’s costs will be even higher for United because the length of the contract will be longer than he will be effective. Circa £150m spent - for circa 2 and a half seasons at best and no prospect of moving him on unless they pay him off. Not really good business buying him purely to guarantee top 4 this year and possibly a run in the FA Cup. Maureen will have told the United Board he can win the CL but I’m not sure they can. This Sanchez deal was obviously the cause of Maureens tantrum a few weeks ago re Transfer spending - a spat he has clearly won in the short term.

Considering that he rejected a higher offer early in the season to stick to his guns with us, I would say he has had a change of heart. If he indeed wanted to play with Pep, no amount of money would have made his head turn, or his agent's head turn enough that Sanchez had no say. He just decided this January to get out of arsenal.
Prior to this window, Sanchez and his camp thought City and themselves wanted exactly the same thing, Leave Arsenal to win trophies.

We probably decided we didn't mind waiting till summer. They wanted out now. We sort of broke the understanding between us, because we were prepared to leave him there against his wishes

We had already agreed fees that both sides were happy with. Signicantly less than the ones he's getting at united. The only went OTT when united got involved.

If we had payed Arsenal's fee, we would have a top player, instead of him going to our local rivals.

That’s conceivable. Also conceivable is that Sanchez and his agent moved the goal posts.

And who’s to say utd would have remained passive observers?

We’re piecing this together from very patchy sources. Pep wanted him and wouldn’t have walked away lightly. Maybe Sanchez's attitude gave him reason. Maybe he has better plans. I don’t know but, in the circumstances, I’m willing to back the club’s judgement.

According to Cross (sometimes reliable, sometimes not) Utd are paying:
35m transfer
20m p/a wages
30m signing on fee
10m agent fee

assuming a 3.5 year deal that's an outlay of £145m, £100m going to Sanchez
We were offering £85.5m in total, £60.5m going to Sanchez

20m transfer
13m p/a
15m signing on fee
5m agent fee (<- speculation on my part)

If those Utd figures are remotely accurate I can't blame the club for refusing to give in. Shame tho that Sanchez is so greedy and Utd so desperate as he, being a pretty well rounded footballer, would have been pretty ideal for us upfront. He can bring the ball down with his back to goal and turn the defender better than post-injuries Aguero can.
This is plain math and people need to understand this really. Let's say we buy a top forward for £120mil (Coutinho went for 105 mil upfront) and pay him 200k/week wages (which is pretty high considering Jesus and Sane are on less than 100k). Add a 5m agent fee and let's say the deal is for 5 years (which is standard for City). That's an outlay of total £177mil over 5 yrs. So compared to Sanchez (145 over 3.5 yrs equals 41mil per yr), that's 35mil per yr. So after spending less money, turns out we can get a younger and better forward in the summer of we want to do that. What's the problem here guys? I fail to see how the club has done anything wrong.

Manchester City have assured Pep Guardiola he will have the funds to sign a top class striker - if he misses out Alexis Sanchez.

The Etihad hierarchy are refusing to meet Arsenal’s £35m valuation for the Chilean, as well as the demands of his agent.

They are so determined not to back down that they are prepared to let Sanchez head to bitter rivals Manchester United this month instead.

But Guardiola - who City insiders say is in complete agreement with their stance - has been told money will be made available in summer for him to strengthen what is already the deadliest strike force in the Premier League.

And that will be significantly more than would be required to land Sanchez this month.

Atletico Madrid striker - and United target - Antoine Griezmann is one player admired by Guardiola, who was interested in signing the Frenchman last season.
Griezmann has 8 goals in 23 games this season. If people are dissatisfied with Aguero, they'll probably burn down Griezmann's house after watching him play.

Maybe just maybe Marvin was right. Sanchez isn’t the athlete he was and maybe Pep can see another Sergio and actually would prefer a 25 /26 year old striker in his prime. We promised to stand by Sanchez after September’s fiasco but this way we have let him break the deal and it would seem that Pep is prepared to play this longer term which suggests he’s hanging around - in contrast to Maureen who’s desperate to prop up his reputation short term.

Big wages of Pogba, Ibrahimovic even Rooney still on the books now possibly Sanchez. Makes the difficult to move on when their time is up.

Would have wanted Sanchez here but not at some of the figures being quoted on his wages, stick to the model of young hungry players who will be here for the long term not someone who has taken some wrong career advise by going to Arsenal and spitting his dummy out for the majority of his time there.
