The media are reporting this as it gets the clicks, it's not being reported that much differently.

We could go in for your hero Bale, whom you were crying to sign a fair few times at various stages in the past. As a matter of fact you just chuck whoever seems to be flavour of the month out as suggestions for us to buy at whatever the cost to send out a message to our rivals. Grow up.

Yes, if those were the figures all along we should have walked last week. Maybe they just hoped he might put football ahead of money. Hence saying the door was still open. Unlikely as that ever was given the kind of sums we now know.

I just wondered if it was possible Sanchez was wavering and United had to throw even more money than we first knew to get him to agree. But you cleared that up too by saying it was Micky Mouse needing a reason to go that was delaying things.

However Sanchez has not suddenly become an old, incompetent player because he's not joined us. I want us City fans to be honest and truthful about football, not deluded like many of their fans. To me it's a blow he's joined them and I don't mind admitting it. He wanted us, Pep wanted him.

I believe we could have got him without the massive wages if we had gone for him this window, instead of trying to put him off until summer.

I assume it's because we have limited squad places and consider other positions more important, but I am still disappointed not getting him.

That is a great post. And exactly what it is all about. United and especially mourinho could not allow sanchez to move to us because they have to find a way of plugging the gap. That it seems was to by far outbid for his services. It doesnt bother me because Pep and the club will have other targets.

Put the offers on the table and the offers are the same...sanchez aint going to united. Something though the tramps from trafford are unable to see, they will see it as a major victory.....whilst we just offered what we thought he was worth and said take it or we’ll leave it.
 
If and when this deal is done, there will be courses for prospective agents at universities around the world with this as the basis of a textbook example of how to get the best deal possible for your client.
 
What I am waiting to see now are the media pushing some imaginary 'rift' between Pep and City for 'not backing him over Sanchez'.

Some on here are fearing that so you can bet someone out there sees a story in it by mixing guesswork and wishful thinking.

But it would underestimate the relationship between Pep and the board that adds to the team spirit of the players from this decision boosting our trust in them over some incoming wideboy megstar wannabee.

Pep seems to know how big that can be and, like I said yesterday, that is in effect a signing we did make by binning Sanchez. It showed we placed more stock in the togetherness and fight of the players who have got us to this historic point in a season not some sulk who has sat there doing little for Arsenal as he desperately wanted to come here - but only - it seems - if we paid him more than the ones who really earned the big money on the pitch for us.

And I expect puncturing this 'rift' was why the line was included in the statement about backing Pep to the hilt in the Summer. That made pretty clear he is 100% on board with this decision and why.

better to be ambitious and try and redress the balance than opt for stasis and accept being 2nd best, or top 4. £500k wages can make sense if it's balanced by success and a successful Man Utd must be able to make hundreds of millions through lucrative sponsorships. It's worth it spending big money brings with it success. We followed this model.

I don't object to the Sanchez deal on the grounds of money, although that does bring with it problems with other players, but on the grounds of his footballing ability. I don't think he is good enough to achieve the step change in performance that Utd are seeking. Were he able to take Utd up a level, you could argue that it makes sense on a financial basis.

This kind of discussion is a bit unsatisfactory because someone can just turn round and say he is that good and we have pantomime: "No he isn't, yes he is"
