I'm not a Boro fan, but I've spent quite a bit of time over Teeside way, and still go to the odd Boro game when City are away/I am around.

They had an absolutely cracking BBC local radio commentator called Ali Brownlee, who has sadly passed away from cancer a few days ago. (couldn't see a thread on it)

One of my mates has just sent me this through which is circulating as a tribute:

It's 100% worth a listen (even though the first bit is about that Fowler pen!) It is just a fantastic reminder that in the days of Sky Sports and mass media generic coverage, that the true passion can always be found closest to home :-)

Alister Brownlee was known as the voice of Boro up here - he was that rare thing - a fan that got the gig reporting on his local team, the team he had supported from being a boy. It got loads of of coverage yesterday and the guy was clearly a legend amongst the Smoggies. Nice guy too it seems. No age to die either poor sod - RIP Ali is all I can say.

I met him briefly on a couple of occasions and he came across as a nice, genuine guy.

The reason I met him was one of the reasons he is such a local legend, it was at grass roots footy events for kids. He really did give up his own time helping out wherever he could.

He put his time and money where his mouth was.

And if you didnt know he went to school with Bob Mortimer!

who had his own brush with death recently - emergency triple heart bypass wasn't it? Presume he will give up the tabs now if he hasn't already.
