All things Dogs

My working cocker has had a 4 week holiday which mainly consisted of beach running/ swimming and sleeping with us every night.

He's about to experience going back to sleeping in the lounge and field walks.

Will miss his snoring,so much nicer than the Wife's.

My brothers dog (Shih Tzu) woke up blind the other day. 2 years old, woke up and sight gone. But jeez its cutting me up, I cant imagine that happening to anyone and the impact. He just stands there trying to make sense of things, trying to understand people. shivering at first but he is getting used to it and now a few days later he is bouncing around happy with his toys and bones. It cheered me up seeing him because my bro and his mrs are pouring lots of love into him (Pep is his name btw), and hopefully his life will be happier, if thats possible.

Anuyway it got me thinking, how much will the dog know about it. Obvs at the time he noticed, but do they have a minds eye, will he remember his owners faces, will he remember the times he could see. Will he be conscious that he cant see whilst other can.

Someone help me make sense of it.

Sorry to hear about that. I can't answer any questions about about the dogs conscious thoughts but dogs rely far less on their eyesight than us, their sense of smell can and often does act as their primary sense. Will take a bit of adjustment but they'll still have a good life without sight. Still relatively easily trainable primarily with vocal commands and it will learn to get around by smell.

My dog is 11 and blind. It happened very suddenly 18 months ago. One day she wouldn't come down the stairs and I thought it was odd. I carried her down and offered her a treat but she couldn't see it in my hand. Anyway, after trips to the vet and the dog eye hospital I was told she has SARDS, sudden acquired retinal displacement syndrome.

She copes well but won't venture upstairs unless I carry her and bring her down. However, downstairs she's able to find her way around OK as long as we keep things in the same place. She independently wanders from the lounge to the kitchen for her water bowl, knows where the back door is and gets down the step into the garden. She finds her own way back in after she's had a wee on the grass. She's amazing and I adore her.

I’ve never had a dog. It’s not that I dislike them but they take a lot of looking after and need walking. In my dotage, I thought I might get a lab as I have so much more time now. Unfortunately, I can’t walk now so the dog will never materialise. Irony.

Had an Alsatian/collie cross many years ago. Mate got it and realised instantly it was the wrong thing to have a dog, so I took him. 10 amazing years with that beast.

Now I’ve took on step dad to my partners Morkie. It’s about 3/4 of a foot tall and on its lead with my 6’4 inch frame we look a right pair of twats. Love her to bits. She thinks she’s my height.

Has anyone used a leg brace for their dog ?
Mine is 11 and i don't want to put her through surgery as the last time she wasn't good when she came round.
Her knee is a bit weak so hoping the brace will help ?

My jack russell has allergy to grass and probably dust too. I've never had a dog with allergies before, it's hard to see him licking his paws red raw. Vet prescribed apoquel at £68 a month ! Anyone else having allergy issues ?

One of mine has apoquel, she's a staffie.

Careful with it as one of the side effects is that it can make your dog a bit more prone to aggressive behaviour.

It does seem to help her with the itching a bit.You can usually pick up the tablets online cheaper than the vets charge, obviously they will nobble you with a prescription charge though.
You can usually use the prescription a few times before you need to get another.

Got two Jacks and both suffer from pollen/dust allergies. Thankfully it seems to have stopped since the cold weather has kicked in- but it seems to last longer as the years go on.

We give them piriton twice a day when they're suffering, which seems to help a bit. Refuse to use the more hardcore prescription drugs like apoquel as I've heard dogs have died because of taking it.

If the symptoms are really bad, get some codeine from the vets to chill them out - that's what I do.

Cheers for that, I will give piriton a try. It's a worry with the apoquel as he's having it every day now.
