Allardyce was on the verge of becoming Man City manager, deal fell through at the last second...

If memory serves me right, it was Fat Sam & Neil Warnock who were rumoured to be in the frame. Pretty sure I recall Warnock throwing his flat cap in the ring & mentioning City as his dream job around the time... :-/

Pearce, Allardyce, Warnock, Hughes... The best of British hey...
If Colin got the gig, that really would have tested my loyalty to the club. Has any side managed by him ever lost a6gsme, and it turned out not to be the ref's fault?

Sick to death of him being slagged off. I think Bolton played some good stuff under him. Seen them at our gaff once and they were fucking good.
He was good at signing class players who were in their last flush of youth. Jay Jay Okocha is the classic example. He then found a way to get the best out of them so fair play to him.
I suppose it's not that different to us with Ali B and Eyal Berkovic under KK

For me this clip puts him in the legend category :)

He's a wobbly gob fucker.
But he was actually a good manager.
That Bolton team with okocha anelka.
Campo etc was a good side.
Comes across as a normal bloke who was a footballer and now he's a manger.
He's a lot better manager than Bruce

Rooney.
Neville.
And loads of ex rags will ever be

Managers such as Warnock and Allardyce both get slagged off on here. Both did the best they could with the squads they had available to them. In the case of Fat Sam, he did an excellent job with Bolton and I suspect that he would have good by comparison with most recent managers at City, Royle and Keegan aside, without requiring wads of cash.

Circumstances changed and Allardyce never arrived and within a year, City were in a different league in terms of manager recruitment.

96/97 season when they beat us 2-1? 2nd tier Champions with that result. Completely played us off the park that night. They were very good under Fat Sam.
I remember that match. Kinkladze had put City ahead but Bolton came back very well.

Fat Sam wasn’t manager at that stage, I think it would have been Colin Todd.

Allardyce only really lost his touch in the mid-2010s imo, between his West Ham and Sunderland stints and the England job fiasco. Having said that, he went to Newcastle instead of joining us in 2007 and he lasted just over six months, although he did then go to Blackburn and did some decent stuff with them.

His Premier League finishes were:

01-02: 16th (Bolton)
02-03: 17th (Bolton)
03-04: 8th (Bolton)
04-05: 6th (Bolton)
05-06: 8th (Bolton)
06-07: 5th when he resigned (Bolton)
07-08: 11th when sacked (Newcastle)
08-09: 15th (Blackburn)
09-10: 10th (Blackburn)
10-11: 13th when sacked (Blackburn)
11-12: 3rd in Championship (West Ham)
12-13: 10th (West Ham)
13-14: 13th (West Ham)
14-15: 12th (West Ham)
15-16: 17th (Sunderland)
16-17: 14th (Crystal Palace)
17-18: 8th (Everton)

Then he stops taking jobs for more than six months.
