There is really only PV who does the NDJ role and I am sure read a quote saying he will retire at end of season so if this guy is a replacement for PV and enable rotation allowing NDJ to be rested then so be it. Seems to have good credentials and no doubt PV knows him and he could have recommended him to Bert.

Contrary to the myth, i also think central ('defensive') midfield really needs strengthened.

However, whilst Diarra is a very good player, it seems a strange target to me.

Barry - 29, Vieira - 53, Yaya - 28, De Jong - 26 and Milner - the youngest at 24.

We have plenty of experience there, i would have thought we'd have a more long-term, younger target in mind.

Maybe RM plans to move Yaya and/or Gazza into a more attacking role and needs Diarra as back-up in the defensive midfield department.
