America Bombs Venezuela

No one, but now it will be US companies running and selling it.

You doubt oil was the reason for the attack? How many times does Trump need to tell you, with his own words, that it was about oil. Seven times he mentioned oil in that mental press conference alone.
"No-one" is the wrong answer.

Some of the discussion here seeks to explain why US refineries need Venezuelan oil. So why didn't US refineries just buy it? Answer: Trump stopped it.

Here's a useful explanation of the real reason, worth 20 minutes of your time rather than arguing here.

Protecting the petrodollar.

Here's a taster from the middle of it:

Whole thing here:

This entire military episode against Venezuela highlights how stupid Trump is.

He somehow, actually fucking believes, that a very risky military operation to kidnap the head of state and his wife of a foreign government, without consent of Congress, will somehow miraculously lead to a change in regime... one that favors the United States, and that is stable, and that major oil companies will be willing to invest in Venezuela to develop their oil fields with some sort of attendant benefit to the USA.

FFS - this is so fucking stupid that it makes the mistaken invitation of Jeffery Goldberg into a Signal app conversation discussing imminent attacks against Houthi rebels in Yemen pale into insignificance.

I don’t think he sees anything other than him & his mates getting richer even if it means higher debt from military spending, lots of death. The people who lose tend to be the working classes & soldiers on both sides.

Agree in that he somehow sees this as some sort of maneuver that will personally enrich himself.

At the same time, this illustrates how fucking stupid Trump is. There's no fucking way that any big oil company is going to invest in Venezuela - it's too unstable.

And moreover, Trump somehow thinks that by removing Maduro, somehow, everything will be rosy... that the successor government will be cowed into doing whatever Trump wants... that "America will lead."

Trump won't get his way - obviously - and - I think it's likely that Trump will stage yet another military operation against Venezuela - but this time, the mission may fail and for sure, American soldiers will die.

Well Trump does have shares in some big oil companies from memory so theres that.

Beats me... but even if so... it's a huge defect in cognitive ability to conclude that by kidnapping Maduro, suddenly major oil companies will be willing to invest in developing Venezuelan oil. There's no fucking way that's happening until a completely stable, foreign-investment friendly, capitalist government takes charge.

Denmark being a NATO member think we can rule out Greenland unless he's completely lost his marbles.
If he took control of Greenland I cannot see Nato doing anything militarily. They'd send strongly worded letters but that's it. Nato does not have an army, rather a number of countries that could supply troops. I do not see any individual country supporting the liberation by means of an attack via land and sea. Trump would declare it an act of war and bearing in mind he already has the military throughout Europe.....
I know it sounds fanciful but Trump is not your normal politician.
Finally, I'd argue he never had any marbles to lose.

At least it'll give Hollywood a chance to bring out a glut of films about how some Americans died & others have scary dreams, whilst many, many more civilians, who no one gives a shit about, were slaughtered

I’ve always had a strong opinion an backed the UK/US decisions over historic military actions, and I fully understand this was 100% a US operation without UK involvement, but something about this Venezuela invasion and removal doesn’t sit right with me at all.

The USA have zero right to land in a foreign country with military might, and simply remove a leader.
Pity nobody wanted to protect the rights of native Americans.

They’ll invest enough to take the oil, they aren’t going to invest in the country. Look at countries like Haiti, its poorer now than it’s ever been but the US corporations & individuals who saddled it with debt aren’t.

So Putin invades Latvia and ships their President off to Moscow and puts him on trial for corruption? Would the rest of the world be okay with that? The long term implications of Trump and his so called foreign policy will haunt the world for years to come.
It’s exactly what Putin tried to do with Zelensky, and it was a close run thing too.
