American Comedians.

George Carlin. The entire American left wing damn near owes its political worldview to him :)

While we're on it, Lenny Bruce, without whom Pryor and Carlin might have never seen the stage.

I have always been partial to Bob Newhart, whose delivery I find completely unique.

And Don Rickles was hilarious. The best insult comic ever until Triumph came along.

Considered one of the best ever stand up routines ever. Richard Pryor live at long Beach. Apparently he had been boo'd off stage that week/night before. I'll put a link in a spoiler because this was the 70s.

Eddie Murphy's Delirious or Raw would not have happened but for this genius.

I remember going to see the Pryor "film" at the Aaben in Hulme way back when. Don't think I'd ever laughed so much in my life. Had never seen anything like it before. Brilliant.

Actually saw Eddie Murphy live in Nashville and he was very funny but Pryor be the daddy.

Agree about Bob Newhart, great delivery. I've watched Carlin a few times, but find his delivery very, very annoying. Maybe I've just watched the wrong stuff - funny, but annoying.

He was brilliant, but used the forum as much for social commentary -- very biting and stringent ideologically. I think it's his influence that made him great. In between edgy and manic. I can see how he would be annoying to lots of people -- I feel the same way about Larry David.

Newhart was and is I think my all-time favorite. His schtick never gets old to me, whether his stand up or his sit coms or just a bit part like in the movie "Elf". It's just genius, and incredibly funny.
