american election

Thought McCain's concession speech was enormously dignified, despite the morons in the crowd booing Obama's name when McCain praised him.

Obama's acceptance speech, however, was something else. I really do hope he makes a success of this - he seems a fundamentally decent human being. The House will be onside, and fingers crossed for the Senate too.

Jeez, a Democrat elected on a progressive platform after a positive campaign - who'd have thought that 4 years ago?

I thought this was the first time I'd seen the TRUE McCain, in his concession speech. I think had we have seen this side of him more HE would've won. I think he succumbed to his party's line and, in fact, the GOP was LESS progressive than McCain was. My respect for him, for the way he handled defeat, went up 100 fold.

As for Obama? Well, I'm plesantly surprised that he didn't go for the orchestral heart strings dreamy/ teary eyed speech, but continued in his quest to unite the US, by underlining his commitment to be a 'president for all people'. It was unthinkable that he would keep to his word of wanting work with John McCain to find a way forward, but that's what he said he would do and was confirmed by the phone call to McCain prior to the concession speech.

If the intention to usher real change isn't seen here, as an example, then when will we EVER trust a politian's intentions? Everybody wants to believe a politian in modern times.

Let's see if we can again, once more.

I don't know if you listened to it but do you remember Bush's mandate speech 4 years ago after barely winning re-election? About how he had "political capital and we're going to spend it" and then you had Rove going on about a permanent Republican majority and the death of the Democratic party.........bottom line, they aren't that smart are they? hubris? do you think they even know what it means?

You didn't hear anything about a mandate last night. I'm encouraged.

Must admit I am still very surprised the Americans have gone for socialism being such a capitalist country, many will suffer they might have to trade those gas guzzling 4x 4 for something a bit more economic.

if you do happen to read this Barrack, first off you must increase mass immigration in to the good old USA, relax the border crossing at Mexico, will give you a loyal government dependent voter base in the long run,TB did this quite effectively ,you don’t want any chance of a republican government ever returning, you know it makes sense :-)

I love the way socialism immediately equals a progressive tax system. Well if that's the case then the US has always been a socialist country. And since I still have George Bush listening to my phone calls and reading my emails, shit I guess we're totalitarian too! Socialism entails the government taking over the entire production of goods and services of every private industry......and the US government recently did buy stock and infuse capital in private banks but I'm pretty sure McCain was pushing that as well as Bush.......so......uh....you're a little confused I think.

Republicans are the main proponent of loosening the borders for economic reasons. The more illegal immigrants, the greater the labor supply, the lower the wages equals more profits for big business, weakening of unions yadda, yadda, yadda. That's free market, neo liberal policies. A true free market means the free movement of goods, services and labor. The socialist thing to do would be to close up the borders to "protect" domestic labor. Bush wanted to loosen the borders even more but his immigration bill didn't pass.

So do you support tighter immigration in the UK?......what are you a labor union communist?

He is as socialist if ever I saw one, don’t be so afraid embrace him and his policies, anyway we have had it for years here in the United Kingdom it is not as bad as it seems, just so sad TB missed out on such a momentous occasion,

Anyway only the rich need fear Barrack the lazy and work shy, will do all right

Obama is even less of a "socialist" than Blair! And he's the second most right-wing post-war Prime Minister we've had.
No TB was New Labour, just look around the United Kingdom a decade of Socialism is evident everywhere.

We have the most top heavy state dependent work force In western Europe, pensions alone will cost the lot of us over 1 trillion

I must admit TB did come across a bit Right Wing that was because of his contempt for the democratic process all well documented.

Who knows we might find TB and GWB on trial in The Hague some time soon.
