I thought id check some of the main US websites to get there take on the game and found myself becoming frustrated at the way in which they describe a game, drives me mad! Here are a few points from the NY Times website,

"England was ready to celebrate Steven Gerrard, the captain of the national soccer team"

"With his team leading the United States by 1-0 after Gerrard’s goal, Green handed a goal, and a 1-1 tie, to the Americans. "

"The Americans were outshot by 16-11"

"it cost England 2 points (the team earned only 1 for the tie)"

They have to explain that a team only gets 1 point for a draw!! fuking idiots.

Best headline in American paper was. America WIN 1 - 1.

-- Mon Jun 14, 2010 11:43 am --

Best headline in American paper was. America WIN 1 - 1.

Seems quite a well balanced and sympathetic article to be fair. I guess we are so used to hyperbole and bold groundless boasts about our teams chances or results that we often lose perspective on what the reality is...

big deal if they say how many points the teams get?! its not the number 1 sport for them so a lot of people wouldnt know anything! good for the game the more exposure it gets!
I wouldnt have any fucking clue on the rugby world cup, cricket world cup or 20/20 world cup.

Read any of the articles about baseball or American football that occasionally appear in the English press and I'm sure it will include bits and pieces that Americans would find completely unnecessary.

And the whole 'USA wins 1-1' thing is a play on a famous old headline in the States about a college American football game between Harvard and Yale. They're not actually that thick.

Yale were winning 22-0 and then fell apart, with Harvard having a storming final few minutes to draw the game 29-29. To reflect the scale of the collapse and the magnitude of the comeback, the local Harvard paper ran with "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29" as its headline. Yesterday's NYP headline was just a play on that.

It's still shit, but at least it's not quite as stupid as it first appeared to those who didn't understand its relevance.

I'm sure Ant-emilydesign and the others on this thread will be able to fully explain the Shotgun formation to me.

Really don't understand why this bothers some people so much. Really, who gives a shit?
