an interesting discussion...

SUAREZ IS A FUCKING CHEAT OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!!!!!!!!

Atleast he took a card and sacrificed himself for the benefit of the team.
His tournament is over as a result of it, but it isn't for the rest of the team, i'd have done the same thing if i'd been in that circumstance.

I think for blatant Handball like this they should either have 2 Chances to score from the Spot or maybe take the Penalty with someone else in Goal (ie: Not the Keeper).

The Chances of a penalty being scored are 50/50 so imo is not a fair advantage if someone has been cheated out of a Goal.

Well done Suarez. One of those unique moments where passion, love and instinct usurp thought. My opinion would be different if he got away with it.

come on now, that cant work - more than one chance to score etc

the chances of a pen being scored are not 50/50

a player (who is good enough) will score 100% of the time - elano

a good pen is unsavable

Yeah maybe but Gyan is a good Penalty Taker normally. The pressure to score would be immense in them conditions, all Im saying is its not a fair advantage for the blatant cheating.

another side to ur point that u made about having 2 chances from the spot and no goalkeeper, the player who's chance suarez blocked should be the one who had to take the penalty in that case, so in essence, gyan should never have been allowed to take the penalty if ur wanting total rule changes, that could be one of the one of the rules that is enforced because of ur reasoning.

as for the original post, the rule has been around for donkeys years, and i don't see any need to change it, everyone is fully aware of it before they even go on the pitch, and it's happened many times before.

I'm not a fan of rugby by any means, but I know they can award a penalty try can't they?

I'm unsure about this one. The debate so far has shown that there are loads of variables such as was it deliberate? Was it definitely going over the line? etc..

i think because of this, any decision to award a penalty goal would be fraught with difficulty for the referee, and whilst it's fairly easy now to award a penalty, you'd get teams getting away with it scott free because the referee wouldn't have the bottle to award a penalty goal, and there wouldn't be the option to give a penalty kick either.

So on the whole, I'd say leave it as it is, after all, the times when it's as blatant as it was tonight aren't that often are they? and even then it took the commentary team a replay to make sure.

Actually I looked at the stats, in club football last season, roughly 80% of the penalties given were scored.
