And now Blockbuster goes Bust

Is this just a UK thing? - what is happening across Europe with these sorts of businesses?

We have always said that CD's were overpriced in the UK, despite what the EC investigation came up with a few years ago. Would HMV still be in a good position if they priced CD's at a price that we would pay?

If I think of here in the Czech republic:-

There isn't really a Jessops or a Blockbuster

Datart and Euronics are the Comet equivalent and electronic products in general are very expensive, so much so that me and my girlfriend usually drive to Dresden to buy electronic products and it saves a fortune, and it's only a 75/90 minute drive.

Bontonland is the HMV equivalent and it is incredibly expensive - as a maybe extreme example The Beatles In Stereo Vinyl Box [Boxed Set] is £400 but on good old Amazon you can get it for £285

CD's and DVD's are even expensive in Tesco, hence there is a massive pirate/downloading culture here.

Hardly surprising about Blockbuster. It's about £3.50 to hire a film that's been released in the last 6 months for 1 night. If you forget to take it back, you get charged again. We were going to hire the Pixar film Brave on the 23rd of December but it was £4 for one night. We went to asda and bought it for a tenner. They never tried to keep up with regards to film watching. They raised the white flag and concentrated their efforts on trade in video games. The problem with this was that their prices both for trading in and for buying were not as good as other places so the need to go to Blockbuster very quickly disappeared.

Yep, there is very little point in getting films from there ... Lovefilm you can pay a tenner and get 3 dvd's a month, with no fee if returning late, much better service on the web than walking around that hell hole

Not sure about other countries but here it was severe shit management and lack of forsight.
They persisted with an outdated business model and this financial climate was just the death blow, symbolic only really.

They have nobody to blame but themselves.

Piracy is big but not the reason they shut down.
Piracy is usually commited by men between 15 - 30 and when asked said they would all pay for stuff if it was a reasonable price and the others said they would not buy it either way and simply would wait for tv to show it.

Hollywood has made record profits year on year but they do not share the cash evenly.
The stars get millions and the gaffers, grippers, other backstage staff get fuck all of it.

I buy blu rays i like after downloading and watching but if it's shit then i just delete it and i have saved a few quid renting/buying it.

Also what Kev say's it's just a hassle that people can't be arsed with.

On your way back from work and you think "fuck gotta drop that dvd back" and your knackered, bleh nobody can be arsed with that.

They should be what netflix is today but they chose the wrong option and their suits are a disgrace to have failed so badly.

makes me laugh how there are so many social media campaigns to 'save hmv' and such public outcry that these firms are going bust.

they are doing so for a reason, and apart from HMV which i liked, none of the rest will be missed

No surprise....I mean who rents DVDs nowadays, I don't know of one person, it's all Love Film type things, torrents etc, was only a matter of time for the likes of Blockbusters, HMV, Jessopps etc
