We were making enquires about him in the most recent window(s), were we not?
Did anything come out of those discussions, a yes, a later maybe, a no?

Did we go for Garcia instead of Herrara? But Javi is more of a defence-oriented midfielder than Ander if I'm not completely mistaken.

From what I have seen, he looks like a really good player, a Gerrard type with more technical skills.

Edit - sorry, I just saw we had an old thread on him. Mods feel free to merge.

Saw him play for Spain at the Olympics and he was easily their best player on the day. Outshone Alba, Javi Martinez and Mata. I think he would be worth a punt.

I recall on the original thread there was a persistent rumour linking us with him over summer. This was around May/June. Indeed Tolmie confirmed that he was being scouted.

I suspect that any ongoing interest collapsed into the black hole that was the summer transfer shambles.

However I have no doubt that he would be one of the names in Txiki's little black book.

I am very confident that Txiki will work his magic if not in January then most definitely in summer.

Got the same feeling as well and was looking forward to seeing him here with us. Well well... maybe he just didn't want to come here, who knows?

on what basis is everyone seeing Txiki as a miracle worker? Not saying he isn't, just wondering what the basis is

Nobody knows for sure what Txike will bring to city ,but what is clear is that he is a big name with a big reputation, and in football those attributes are hard to say no to

I remember watching him after we'd been linked with him and personally I wasn't that impressed. He certainly wasn't as overhyped as Javi Fucking Martinez, but he didn't necessarily shine either.

Actually Athletico Bilbao are full of talented useful players.

Aren't they supposed to have a really good domestic scout system and youth set-up?

They must have, considering the special circumstances they operate under. Something which ought to be of interest to our club designing the new campus.

Of course, because they can't scout outside their district.

Their players are average & above average but I don't remember them producing some World Class players.

Ander Herrera plays in Liga but that also means that he has a certain price tag and may not leave Bilbao because of their local policy. Likewise, other talented midfielders like Canales would want to have regular play in the first team.

But we can also look out for younger players to groom in the second teams:

The classiest ones are Jesé Rodriguez (Real Madrid) Oliver Torres (Atlético) Sergi Roberto (Barcelona) Jonathan Dos Santos (Barcelona).

All of them are classier than any youngster I have seen in Premier League...

He is a very good player indeed. Bilbao are on the decline this year, he may want to broaden his horizons.
