Android emoticons/smileys

A couple of weeks back, my M9 phone updated its software overnight (now running Android 6.0, software number 3.35.771.12.). Ever since then, the emoticons/smileys have a "squashed" appearance:

And it doesn't matter if I'm using the standard HTC Sense Input keyboard or the SwiftKey board; the result is the same. Is there any way I can get them back to their "normal" appearance?

You may be able to change using your text clients settings, I use Textra and can change to 4 different styles.
