Another brewery goes bust

Small breweries are a actually major success story in this country in recent years. Cask ale production overtook keg for the first time a few months back.

Credit where credit's due, Gordon Brown deserves great credit for this, reducing the levels of duty on breweries operating below certain annual volumes. It's really made a difference in what is a uniquely British manufacturing industry.

Cain's is an example of a business ran poorly rather than any evidence of a deterioration in the market. It's sad that Liverpool doesn't have any widely recognised breweries. Higson's, which was brewed on the same site, was a great pint until Whitbread closed it down after they acquired Boddington's in 1990.

Someone will take that site though, no danger. It's a beautiful building and is well located for redevelopment. I doubt if it will be a brewery again. Flats/hotel/cinema etc will be the order of the day I reckon.
I hope you are right about small brewers mate, love some of the beers that you can get in certain Manchester hostelries all independent brews, these big brewers could learn lessons off them as their beers are going rank and i try not to touch lager (premium or not)

It's to do with conditioning, I had an interview with ABInbev and they were very proud of getting Stella ready to drink in about 3 days, it reduces storage space required, it also means there's very little chance of getting any depth of flavour into your beer.
Stella 10 years ago deserved its nickname ''wife beater'', had some in London cup final day should now be called ''fly swatter'' fuckin dreadful stuff nowadays

There are laods of thriving brewerys too, ones that actually make decent beer. So many specialist bars are popping up stocking local ales and great beers from across the country. The reason caines went bust is because it tastes like shit
Landlord mustv cleaned his pipes out on the day i had it then, as said only had a couple and that was about 7 years ago

Pouring it away? That's a travesty.

Surely someone an find a good home. I have 2 sheds I could fill.
Thats what they just said on North West news, there must be an alternative, what about a tenner to get in and drink your fill!!!

I'd be up for that.. Reminds me of the days of Tokyo Project in Oldham.. £5 in and all you could drink :)

-- Mon Jun 24, 2013 10:18 pm --

Fuck the lawnmower, I need space for the beer..

A horrible time for those losing their jobs.
I've been in that situation a few times.

Cains is a DREADFUL pint, though

Micro breweries are springing up all over the place. Some good products too. When I think back to some of the gnat's piss I was brought up on.....

Micro pubs are the latest thing in some areas. Former shops, no food except maybe local cheeses and stuff, real ales, no lager, no music, no fruit machines, good conversation.

I like to think I do my bit to nurse the industry through challenging times.

Sorry to hear that, had a few pints over the years and was always decent. The building in the middle of Liverpool is a cracker.

The brewery in town got taken over a few years back by one in Dorset (Badgers) and closed down, spawning three small breweries which are still going.
I think you mean Hall and Woodhouse, mate.
Yes, but I thought people would recognise Badger ales rather better than the company's name.
