I don’t think that was his remit. Nor should it have been. I think the job of the 1st team manager, whoever that may be, is to win things. If that means not bringing through the youth, so be it. And I always believe that if a player is good enough, he’ll break through. I don’t recall any of the Mancini-era youngsters being good enough. And I don’t see many from the current crop making it either. Just my opinion, based on what I’ve seen. Would enjoy seeing some of them make it and for them to be part of a successful 1st team, but, at end of day, totally not bothered if the 1st team wins shed-loads of trophies and there are no youngsters as part of that. I grew up watching Lake, Brightwell, White etc, all touted as great young things, all part of Youth Cup winning squad and they went on to win the square root of fuck all. I doubt Pep will be loading the 1st team with any of the EDS players unless there’s an injury crisis. And he’ll always have our owners’ deep pockets to help. We’ll see.
