An addict is an addict, whether they're addicted to fast food, beer or heroin. I'm not going to celebrate the death of a 'junkie' just because they're seen as scum - they're still somebody's son or daugfhter and have just made the wrong choice in life.
This. I know they do scummy things but they're desperate, only if you have known someone or have been in that position yourself can you begin to understand.
I bet there's a lot of people on here that'd be in serious financial trouble if they lost their job or went on long term sick tomorrow.
I've seen it happen where peoples lives just implode when they lose their job - house, car and everything barring what they can get in a holdall - all gone in a few months. If you have family that'll put a roof over your head that's ok. Plenty don't though and end up on the streets. Then, if they haven't already, they find the answer in a bottle. Then drugs.
Same with kids in care and armed forces personnel. They're so used to being looked after and told what to do and when to do it - they come out and just can't hack it.
So next time you see a down and out or whatever you want to call them - just think for a moment - that guy might have put his life on the line fighting for this country, he might have lost his Mum and Dad as a young kid or just been abandoned and stuck in care through no fault of his own.
My friend was asked for some money by a girl in Manchester. He said no but I'm going to sit in the chippy and have dinner come and join me. Which she did. Turns out she was being abused by her Mums partner and her Mum just thought she was making it all up to split them up. So she ran away. Ended up on the streets and just couldn't get off them. Admited she did drugs but said it was all that got her through the day.
