Kiss the badge... kiss my arse
Ive just bought a new laptop. Its comes with a mcafee 30 day trial, I was just wondering what I should do after that, is there any free anti viral software that is worth downloading or should I just buy a Norton or a full Mcafee etc etc. If I do go for a bog standard package from the shops, whats the best one to go for? I used to use one called Avast which was free, is that still around or are those free one dodgy?

Without doubt the best anti-virus programs are not the free ones. Unfortunately it's very much a case of you get what you pay for. Try here for some recommendations...

I've got ZoneAlarm as my firewall & anti-virus (it uses the Kaspersky engine) and it's excellent.

What kind of price range is a good shout?

Its free and hasn't failed me once in 4 years.

Sorry I cant be arsed getting you the address, but just type it in Google.

Approx £30 for a complete internet security suite. It might sound like a lot but it really is worth it. Free security software is not as good, simple as. Especially with the ingenuity of some viruses/spyware & rootkits.

Seems a day can't go by these when you get another virus, had to rebuild twice because the softwares I had before were supposed to be good enough, like a minefield when trying to fix the fixable :)

Avast doesn't seem to have a good rep now. This is from pcpro magazine...

In terms of malware detection, Avast placed near the bottom of the pack, identifying and removing just 70% of malware overall. In our email tests, it identified a further 4% of malware, but was for some reason unable to remove the infected attachments.

I aint a computer geek mate. All I know is ive used it on two PC's (my old one and now this new one) for the past four years without a single problem.

I go on all sorts of risk'e sites lol.

If you're looking for a free solution then AVG is the best, end of. The free version has spyare protection & real time link scanner. However even the free version is not as good as AVG Pro. This is reasonably priced and can be purchased in South Manchester for a tenner to blues (six grand to red twats).

NOD32 & Avast are okay, not my first choice. Free spyware protection; Windows Defender (has realtime protection). Spybot (the original and still the best), doesn't have real time protection but does have Tea Timer (kind of real time registry protection but is a pain in the arse imo). Latest versions of Ad-aware are shite so dont bother.

Thing to remeber; you can have the best virus protection in the whole fucking world but if you are torrenting or shit like that then you're gonna get virused up. Think of it like taking a stroll down the Reeperahn (Hamburg shag alley) , then shagging anything that moves without a condom then wondering why you catch aids. You have been warned.
