I have Bt infinity fibre optic broadband at home and it's been great for over a year. Now all of a sudden a strange problem has arisen. I can connect to the internet wirelessly with my phone and ipad, my wife's phone and ipad but just yesterday my smart tv and my laptop and also an xbmc box refuse to do so. The laptop shows connection but only local. I tried all that I know which isn't a lot but I would appreciate any guidance you guys can give. I cannot understand why some things will connect and some won't as they can't all have gone faulty at once.

Its in the broadband settings..you need to allow some devices to access / send data. Connect the broadband router to your laptop and follow the instructions in the handbook...

Right I've just spent an hour with the BT helpline chap who finished up insisting it was a fault with my wireless connection in the house after trying all he new and saying I would have to pay and get my own engineer to look at it. After a round of both barrels from me quoting how much I pay and how little they do for it he tried a hard reset on the hub and hey presto all up and running.

Lol, I've just finished watching the whole of the 'The IT Crowd' from start to finish. The funny thing being that it worked for him.

Push for this every time. If you are getting nowhere, make an excuse to end the call politely. Ring again till you get an operator willing to help. Thank them kindly and they will be happy.

Sorry gents, but I am going to derail a little here.
I have virgin broadband and after going into my hub I looked at my usage. It reckons in the last 7 days I have downloaded 2879gb of data and uploaded 500gb.
Now, even in my most prolific days of downloading filth, I never got to those kind of numbers in a month, probably a year.
I do stream movies around the house to the xbox/ipad/wii etc. would that be a portion of the data? As the little miss is constantly watching her cartoons/films on something on other.
If not what could be causing me to be using nearly 3tb of download data. Because I certainly don't seem to be.

Now, even in my most prolific days of downloading filth, I never got to those kind of numbers in a month, probably a year.
I do stream movies around the house to the xbox/ipad/wii etc. would that be a portion of the data? As the little miss is constantly watching her cartoons/films on something on other.
If not what could be causing me to be using nearly 3tb of download data. Because I certainly don't seem to be.

Does that not include ALL TV no matter where you watch? Obviously not anything stored locally on your PC or a media server but anything streamed over the fibre optic cable?

Edit :- Thinking about it are you sure that it's GB and not MB, you haven't missed a dot out of the figures?

Well that's over 17GB an hour EVERY hour which would trigger Virgins speed cap I'm guessing (they still have a fair usage speed capping system?) so I figure you would have noticed the slow down.

isn't there someone on here who works for Virgin? Try and find him/her.

That's a huge amount of data I would suspect it just has to be wrong.

Unless you've got a family of 6 ALL using the internet at the same time on different devices.

I'm not a computer expert but I don't read that as being close to 3TB. I read it as 2gb and 879mb.

Where did you get that reading from? I've just been on mine and for 19 days since I last turned on my Hub my usage is this:

Session Time 19days 18h:14m:2s
Session Data Downloaded 26GB 350MB
Session Data Uploaded 9GB 281MB

I don't download films, but I'd say this usage looks right for YouTube, BBC iPlayer downloads, football match downloads, and videos of filth for a couple of minutes each day.

EDIT: Something just went ping in my head that I fucked up in this post and what I wrote in bold is completely stupid. True brain fart that day last week. The info below the bit in bold should still be useful as a comparison. So like others have said, the reading must be wrong. Either that, or a neighbour is using your broadband connection for free and making the most of it.
