Most of the names if not all will be Champions League cup-tied so we would have to wait until the summer to buy the best unless we go to South America for untried but promising options.

From what I have read I'd go for Hummels but it would have to be a huge bid to persuade Dortmund to sell.

I am sure that there are some top quality center backs knocking around and I like the look of Thiago and Subotic. Apart from that JT is still decent and Carvalho has great positioning but there must be plenty more. Phil Jones looks like he could develop into a decent player and Vidic defends as if his life depends on it. Lots of people mentioned Luiz, and whilst he is comfortable on the ball, his defending is still open to debate.

chiellini is certainly not shite ... over rated by some who only watch a handfull of his games at the most however still a top defender who would be a significent improovment on lescott...however i also like the look of both dortmund centre halfs subotic and hummels...and also tiago silva would offer us some steel at the back.
