Cheers G, a mate of hers has had a look at it and said water has been getting into the oil and engine's overheated( possibly not word for word and correct but was my understanding of it) head gasket/engine has gone as a result and around £250-£300 to repair.

You can do it for less than a 1er,
Get the head skimmed at Oldham engine parts for around £30, the gasket kit is about £15, oil n coolant and a haynes, the engines are a piece of piss to work on.
