Anybody else not bothered with the Champions League?

I was always premier league first and CL 2nd but it was also important that we showed up better in the CL than last year. So far it's not looking great in either competition but there is still time to get it sorted.

The scum could finish 5th and still get pot 1

They could get relegated, come back up, finish 4th, and STILL be in Pot 1 probably! Just like Financial Fair Play the whole seeding system is set up to protect the established elite. With that said, we could be getting much easier draws than we are whether in Pot 2 as we are now or Pot 3 as we were last year. It's just ridiculously bad luck. If we had a group like AC Milan/Anderlecht/Zagreb (if those ridiculous technicalities didn't prevent us from drawing those clubs as they did Cluj and Nordsjælland) we could have gone through with maximum points.

Yep very unlucky with our group but I still have hope we can beat Ajax twice and then who knows...

The seeding is more unfair on the smaller countries as we are given significant help from our national coefficient - and out past performances in europe which haven't been very good.

It is a boring format though with group stages - and the music before the game and the stuff in the centre circle is a big turn off, along with how time added on seems to be limited.

I think the only reason we ended up in pot 3 this season is because Chelsea won the company last year and pushed English coefficients up. We should have still been in pot 4.

-- Thu Oct 04, 2012 5:12 pm --

It's not an unfair group. The UEFA ranking of clubs is fair and has been for years. We don't deserve to be any higher than we are in the rankings and should be in pot 4 and 3 for now. On the European stage Manchester City are nobodies. CFR Cluj have more champions league pedigree than us.

Be patient. In ten years time I'd hope we'd be established enough and good enough to be in pot 1 and we'd have the experiences of twelve years in the competition to take forward as a club and a set of fans.
It's wrong I think.
The rags could finish 4th every season for the next few years and still be in pot 1

It should be this.

1st pot 1
2nd pot 2
3rd pot 3
4th pot 4.
That's not how rankings work though. Rankings in tennis, cricket, most sports go off an accumulation of points over a prolonged period.

We're in Pot 2 which makes our group even more harsh.

Look at the teams in Pot 4 and who we ended up with.

We went from pot 3 to 2 - but you could be right.

Dortmund and Napoli being Pot 4s was just unlucky, and that is what did and could cost us.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get out of the group, and I don't think we will now. But the key is to retain the PL - if we do then CL becomes irrelevant. If we don't, then anything less than qualification from the group will be deemed a rather large failure.

I dont get it.all the years of mediocre football at best, relegation then promotion, followed by relegation,no european football for years, and some of you are fed up with the champions league, the premier club tournament, the best players in europe.I think some of you need a reality check.I know id rather see real madrid, dortmund etc than some of the no hopers in the europa league.Isnt this what we all wanted when the sheik took over

There are financial implications too, our efforts to comply with Financial Fair Play might depend on regularly advancing beyond the CL group stage. Look at all the money there is to be made, we're already missing out on some by failing to win.

€550,000 per group match played

Group stage: €3,900,000
For each match in group stage: €550,000
Group match victory: €800,000
Group match draw: €400,000
Round of 16: €3,000,000
Quarter-finals: €3,300,000
Semi-finals: €4,200,000
Losing finalist: €5,600,000
Winning the Final: €9,000,000

(I'm not sure that even includes TV revenue either)
